since i'm now playing kotor for the 5th time, and i still love it, i have been trying to think what about it makes it so good

the charachters, story, environments, battles and everything is excellent, but even apart from all those things it has an incredibly fun atmosphere that has not been surpassed by any other game

what do you think is the secret that makes it so fun?
please state your ideas

It has the three key features of any RPG: An interesting story, a fun and (mostly balanced) character progressions system, and a fun combat system.

Everything else isn't really as important. While i liked the game a lot, it suffers from a lot of flaws. But considering it does well on the three major categories, the flaws are easy to overlook.

The best thing about the game is the fact that you dictate everything your character says.

To me KOTOR is so great for 5 reasons

1.) Star wars is awesome

2.) Great story

3.) Gameplay was fun

4.) You don't even have to ba a Star wars fan to enjoy this game.

5.) Being a jedi

true but i've noticed that in the very beginning it is already very fun

i think it might be the way the level is designed in terms of everything being fairly close together and the excitement being maintained

nwn2 started in a similar way as kotor, but the nwn2 beginning was boring, while the kotor beginning is fantasticthe l

i think it might be because the level is carefully designed so that you have a buildup of excitement, and no long running around looking for enemies or objects

one can notice that the distances in kotor are much smaller, and there are certain confrontations or charachters that you can meet near every part of the game

for example on taris on one of the runways things you have some bounty hunters on one end, a preacher on the other, some drunks in the middle, and a cantina shop and apartment on the sides

so wherever you go you can have part of the ambiet feel, and not just during cutscenes like in many other games

The key element in my opinion is mainly the story and gameplay. But graphics play an important role in making the game such a great one.

This is the perfect game for me for the following reasons:

1. i love everything there is about star wars

2. lightsabers are awesome

3. being a jedi/sith is awesome

4. interesting story

5. interesting places

6. funny dialogues

7. great characters

8. great story and plot changes

I stopped playing towards the end on my 4th play through because i wanted to play other things, but i should really get to finishing that game.

I am one of those that liked KOTOR but not nearly as much as the hype. I found the story the most compelling but the gameplay was just frustrating. I hate turn based combat. My opinion. Bioware did a good job with tellling a story that was more then passible in a Star Wars setting. If the gameplay would have been better I would have rated it far higher.

1. its Star Wars. Instawin!

2. you can be a jedi or sith. More win!

3. Awesome characters

4. Awesome story

5. Super cool combat and gameplay

6. Lengthy and a good value due to vast replayability.

7. Not to mention the indescribable (undescribable?)satisfaction you get from playing it...some games just make you feel good, and you dont know why. KOTOR is one of those games for me.

Like all Bioware games, Story is marvelous. Gameplay is satisfying for the most part with great twist in the storyline depending on the decisions you conceive. To unaware users, it's certainly worth the investment if by any chance you haven't played the game.

You think its still worth playing after all of these years? I lost interest in it because it took so damn long before you get a lightsaber. I wanted to play a game being a jedi, felt like I played through half the game and never got the saber so i never even kept playing..

I'm on my 3rd paly of Kotor its just so great because:

1. Intresting story (one of the best stories out there):D

2. Funny Characters (Hk-47:D)

3. Fun gameplay (although the combat is a modified turn based)

4. Interactions with npcs is very fun (teasing Bastila is a blast)

5. You can be Jedi/Sith

6. You don't have to like the movie to like to game

How can you say KOTOR combat is cool? Its terrible and is why I can't play the game. You can't do much its all like bleck dissapointing. I hate combat like that. When I see a star wars game i'm thinking real time where I can do cool flips and stuff and it be fast paced like star wars not slow paced and unrealistic (other then lightsabers not cutting through body parts instantly and crap..). Just my opinion on the game.

It's brilliant in everything it does. The storytelling, characters, atmosphere, immersion, loot, skills, choices, exploration...perfect blend of depth and accessibility. I'm playing Neverwinter Nights 2 right now and just got done with the Trial quest. It totally reminded me of the Manaan trial. RPG's need more adventure elements like that and the Dantooine farm murder mystery. Less action, more puzzles and dialogue. I love that stuff.

I remember when I bought this on my xbox and thought it was going to be like battlefront. I was instantly disappointed on the first tutorial mission on the spaceship when I realized it was turn based combat. I'm so glad I decided to give it a chance though.

I think I'll reinstall it on my PC right now.

Yes absolutely. I was so bummed originally when I found out it was turn based and then I played for a little while longer and I was instantly hooked.

I love how KOTOR felt so much like I was playing the original trilogy of star wars movies but at the same time it carved out a very distinct identity of its own. And yes...Bastilla = fine. Her and Alyx Vance are the two greatest heroines in video game history.

Yes, it was one of my first RPG and I didn't like the combat at first and I couldn't even stand playing the game. Coming back to it a few months later and playing it after escaping the ship and I simply couldn't stop playing it! It's much superior to new games like Mass Effect and It has better story than the prequel movies too.

The Force Unleashed was a terrible game though. Lightsabers in that game are the equivalent to baseball bats. Hit someone and they go flying. I liked how in Jedi Outcast 2, if you sliced someone, their limbs are going on the floor. In slow motion, no less.

who agrees with my theory abotu leveling design

if you've noticed in many rpgs you get some story and then you need to go somewhere really far and there's like a ton of combat

the combat parts in kotor though are pretty short and so are the distances, so the story is always fresh in your head and you don't have time to get bored of running like in games like oblivion, or fighting like in games like witcher or nwn2

also there are interactive things dispersed throughout the whole game, not just in little select parts of it

1 - Has a great storyline

2 - Fun RPG gameplay

3 - Interesting characters(HK-47 = the most awesome evil droid ever)

4 - Plenty of replay value because of all the good/evil decisions you can make

5 - It's Star Wars, which means fun Jedi/Sith Lord lightsaber action goodness :P

I have both of them for the original Xbox, and they came out at a time when good RPGs for it were lacking. I beat both of them as a Jedi and Sith. I loved

1) Characters/dialogue

2) Story

3) Exploring the scenery of the Star Wars universe (I'm not even a huge Star Wars Geek, but it was well done nonetheless)

4) Story

I tried playing KOTOR 1 on the PC recently for nostalgia's sake, but I couldn't get into it. I will say that I still remember all of the characters and their backgrounds, though. They should've made a movie from those games.

I have a few questions regarding KOTOR.... I played NWN (the original one) and enjoyed it, but hated the first expansion. I couldn't even finish the first act due to boredom. How good is KOTOR? Which one is better, kotor 1 or 2? How is the battles? Is witcher better than kotor?

Jedi Knight2: Jedi Outcast is probably the most underrated game of the last 2 generations, even with such high scores. I want a Jedi Knight 3, not some lame standalone expansion to JK:2. Amazing story + lightsabers + force powers + awesome combat/gameplay = pure win.
