Is there any point REALLY in having a case with lots of fans?

my i5 is overclocked to 4.4, Graphics card overclocked alittle.... but after a few builds now all having these cases "for good airflow" that sound like godamn wind turbines .... is it REALLY that important or is this psuedo-enthusiast level NONSENSE?

I wish it was silent.... but is that being risky? just getting a case... with 0 or 1 fans....

Most $50-100 mid tower cases don't make alot of noise in my experience (they usually have 1 rear fan, a front fan, and 1-2 top fans). If its a good company that uses good stock fans then there shouldn't be much noise

I'd also like to add that most people who go crazy with fans also don't follow good airflow patterns and all the different fans with different speeds just cause a bottleneck in the case

Usually you wanna have a case that has a fan that intakes air in front and one that exhaust on the back. Then for optimal air cooling you'd wanna have one that exhaust out the top of the case(but not all cases has holes on top it) and another intake fan on the side(again if you have holes there). It's also possible to have an intake fan at the bottom for cases that has holes through its bottom. But the universal rule you wanna follow is to have an equal amount of air that goes in and out. It's not dramatic but if you don't, but more air coming in than out would cause to have a dusty inside of a case. That would cause it's own set of problems.

Well a water cooled system brings higher performance. Which means the fans won't have to be as loud to perform at the same level of a purely air cooled case.

Get one intake fan and one exhaust fan, big and slow to be quiet.

Yeah the bigger the fan, the less RPM it will require to move the same amount of air. Which means more quiet fans.

[QUOTE="dxmcat"]LOL @ Water. Still needs radiators.........which have fans.

Water moves heat away from the CPU far faster than heatsinks, and releases the heat over a far larger surface area (radiator). Water also has a lower ambient temp on top of that. A good liquid cooling setup >>> air cooling.. With a 10 heatpipe Scythe Mugen + 2x 152cfm Delta fans, my crap e8400 wouldn't go above 3.6GHz. With my liquid cooling system, I ran it at 4.5GHz, despite the horrible second core needing 1.55v at that speed...

Which allows you to use fans at 600rpm and still have temperatures you will never see with aircooling while the noise level being less than 15db.

From what I can tell, some users mentioned that you can use water cooling to get quite temps and you said "still need radiators.....which need fans" (you where basically implying that watercooling wouldn't fix the noise issue since it still needs fans).

They called you out by pointing out that fact that watercooling it much much quiter (due to low spin rates needed) and now your bring up/mentioning price which was NEVER in the dicussion......

I was repeating what I said earlier, which were supposedly "false claims"

It was assumed that I was saying water cooling makes as much noise as straight fan cooling.

It still makes noise.

It does but it would eliminate the noise problem that the TC was having (which is why some people where mentioning it). Most of the time it has 50% less noise than the top of the line air fans (you would barely hear 12-15 db in a pitch silent room......).

You keep saying "buh buh it still makes noise" when the purpose of the thread was asking how to lower it (watercooling and highend/bigger air fans are the two solutions).

The only thing quieter than a water cooling setup is a fanless setup.

Your argument is invalid.

The H60 is like $50 on Tigerdirect right now. A decent 3rd party CPU fan would actually cost -more- than that.

I heard low end water cooling isn't really worth it though. You should stick with a Hyper EVO 212 if you're not willing to spend for a H100i imo.

Nah, I have an H60 and it's great if you don't have a case that won't fit an H100.

You really should only need 2 fans in your case, 3 tops. Set them to run silent when out of gaming and then have them clock a little louder when in gaming.

I only have 2 fans in my case with my H50, two fans mounted on both sides of the radiator blowing out the case.

Also a smaller case means better airflow since air is controlled better and pushed harder.

Using a H100 on the 2500k, it can reach 5.0ghz without overheating, and noise is of what you expect from 2 fans when pushed, but it uses a profile, fans settle down at idle.

3930k with a Swiftech H220, now this is high end AIO kit, rivals proper WC, so i really would not call it cheap either, very good, but it costs.

Oh come-on Byshop... wwasn't trying to get at ya or 'invalidate' yer point; just pointing out that there *are* very good CPU coolers which cost less than $50.  And 20% less is more than 'slightly'.

That Arctic Freezer kept my 2600K@4.8GHz between 50°C and 80°C (idle/gaming) without making noticable extra noise.  Temps were on average 10°C higher in my CM Cosmos II than in my Antec 1200 case, by the way, due to the better airflow in the Antec.  The Antec was a lot quiter too than the Cosmos II.  So do cases with more fans make a difference? Sure they do.

I guess it all depends on your case and what's inside it. For example, I have ZERO case fans in my Bitfenix Prodigy. Why? Well, My GPU is positioned on its "side", meaning the fan is facing the air-vented side panel of the case, so there that's how my GPU stays cool. Then there's the CPU - cooled by a Thermaltake WATER2.0 Pro (similar to an H80 cooler), which is mounted on the back of the case, so there's another exhaust. Whichever leftover heat still floating around can just go up and out the top. I used to have a 230mm front intake, but I had to get rid of it after getting the liquid cooler because that required two 3-pin headers, which is exactly how many my Mini-ITX board has, so I had to take the fan out. No difference in temperatures.

No offense was taken. I was just being goofy (as I am wont to do). Percentages always sound impressive when the numbers they are based off of are small, but in this case 20% is still only $10.
