I'm in need of a fairly quick gpu upgrade as my 8800gts died tonight after playing MW2 with the latest update. Does anyone have any info or experience with the MSI n9800gt md1g? Compared to other branded 9800gt's? I tried looking for a benchmark but couldnt find anything except news reports about the release of the card.

Any help is much appreciated! Cheers

the vendor is not a major factor. as long as its not an unknown shady one, you are good to go. MSI is good as i here people talk about it.

Yeah my 8800gts is also MSI and its been pretty good for the past 4 or so years that I've had it.

The problem I have at the moment is that something triggered the card tonight as soon as I joined a match in MW2 after it was updated on Steam. On startup I've got multiple verticle grey dotted lines and once windows starts the desktop is filled with a mixture of black and white squares, red, green and blue dots and other crazy patterns.

I'll try upload a picture from my camera of what it looks like on the desktop.

It is possible that it was the heat today that caused it, everyone else in my family was complaining about the heat today even though the weather felt fine to me. My pc was left on all day though as usual.

I read online people having similar problems but left their pc's off for a few days and it temporarily fixed things. So I'll give it a day and see what happens.

Anyone else had an experience like this? Best solution just to replace the gpu?

the 9800GT is actually slower than the 8800GTS. Why not get the GTS250?

the Zotac GTS 250 is a great card, clocked high, and the price is great compared to other vendors.

Considering that the original 8800gts was released just over 3 years ago, I don't think your card has lasted 4 years. But anyways.. was it an 8800GTS 320mb, 640mb, or 512mb? A 9800gt is faster than the 320 and the 640, but not the 512 (different GPU).

I was about to post the same thing you did, if no one else had beaten me to it. The first 8800GTS 320MB/640MB cards came out November of 2006 and the 8800GTS 512MB came out about a year later in December 2007.

The 9800GT gives you about a 15% boost over the 8800GTS 320/640 card and about a 10-15% lower in performance of the 8800GTS 512 card.

If you're stepping up from the 320/640MB cards to a 9800GT, then that's a good step. If you're going from the 512MB card, then you're moving backwards performance wise.

The price is a bit high for the 9800GT, but seeing as you don't live in the States, the markup in price looks to be unavoidable. Maybe look around for a HD 4850 or HD 4870 - they should be down in price since the launch of the 5xxx series from ATI.

Lmao the 8800gts 512 is faster than the 9800gt, however the 9800gtx is SLIGHTLY faster.

edit: the guy above me summed it up perfectly.

Sweet, thanks for the info, I currently have the 8800gts 320 just to clear things up.

So I left my pc off all night, turned it on this morning and the problem appears to have gone away. But since the damage was done last night I'm sure it happen again, so I'll most definitely need to get the new card anyway.

Maybe the card was just overheating. Check the current temperatures of the GPU. If the idle temps are too high you can place another fan in the case or something to cool components down.

I just started a private match on MW2 and within 10 seconds of standing still the alarm went off with Nvtemplogger, it shot up to 80 degrees celsius.

With my two cards in SLI - they're butted right up next to eachother due to the MB layout. I have to crank the fan speeds up to 60% on the first card and 80% on the second card to keep them running cool @ around mid 40s idle. When I'm gaming they hit upwards of mid 80s.

Most of these GPUs should handle up to 90C without having issues. See if you can set your fan speed to around 60-70% to help keep it cool.

That's way too hot at idle. Time to clean the dust out of the fan/heatsink, put some new thermal paste on the GPU, and crank that fan to 50% or more.

TC, before you buy a new card try baking your current GPU in the oven. Sounds stupid but google it, it has worked for some people and it might prevent you from having to plunk down 200nz for a marginal upgrade.

Reseating the soldered components might not be the answer to your particular problem but it couldn't hurt either... Something that is dead can't get "deader."

Thanks for the advice guys, was going to get the 9800gt 1gb, but the store I was going to get it from isn't getting stock in for another month or so. I'm going for the Leadtek 250 gts 1gb now instead, just costs about $80nz more than the 9800gt.

I would get a 260 gtx, the cheapest one I can get is $318nz (about $230us). Compared to the gts 250 which will set me back $266nz. I'd rather not spend any more on it since I'm a student and all, but would it be worth it to spend the extra $52 and get the 260gtx?

dont think so. when i got my GTS 250, i was torn between it and the GTX275. i didnt consider the GTX260, i dont think the price between it and the GTX275 is significant, but the GTX275 is amazing i think.

A GTX 260 (216 core, not the 192) should give you roughly 50% improvement in performance over a single GTS 250 - more or less depending on the game being played. If you think you can afford a little extra cash, I'd personally go with a GTX 260. If you don't think you can afford it, the GTS 250 1GB card would be a pretty good step up from your (what seems to be dying) current card.

Depends on what GTS it is, the original G80 GTS or the newer G92 powered GTS :) 9800GT would be quite a bit faster then the original G80 core version :) Why don't you buy a 5750 or a 5770 and go next gen? I don't see the point of buying an older card.

That is absurdly hot for that card (or any) at idle. My 8800gts 512 never hit 70 degrees at full load.

Just played some Fallout 3, and i had an average temp around 84 celsius. It did go as high as 87 though.

Hopefully it will hold out until I get my 5970.

That did help. The temp dropped below 60 celsius pretty quickly, but my pc sounds like a jet now -.-

What speed did you set the fan at? It's usually not necessary to set it at over 60%. Fans lose their efficiency pretty quickly once you get over that speed.

u can also try cleaning the dust out of the cooler by blowing compressed air in, that usually helps some.

I've never really had a chance to clean it, so that might be an idea. Should i take the plastic cover off, or can i just blow it through?
