I recently finished the Mass Effect games and really liked them. I was talking to someone about it and they said I was too late to be a fan. Like the only way I could really be a fan of a game is if I played it at launch.

I mean, if this was true, there would be no "true fans" of older games eventually. Anyway, I don't think this is true, but I'm wondering if anybody thinks the same way.

That is pretty silly, of course it's not too late to be fan of a game. It's probably never too late.

I played ME1 two years after it initially came out on the PC... And still became a fan.

You can never stop being a fan of anything - no matter how old that something might be. But, the older something is, the more likely there probably won't be fans like you to interact with.

I'm playing through Mass Effect 3 for the first time right now, actually, but that doesn't make me any less of a fan.

That's kind of silly, those games are still pretty recent.  Also there are plenty of gaming communities out there that focus primarily on games much older than that.

I'm considered a Deus Ex fanboy and I didn't even play the game until a decade after its release. I'd say you're fine.

I'm happy to see people don't think the same way he does.

Speaking of Deus Ex, that is the other trilogy I am playing. :D

Sorry to say, but your friend is an idiot if he thinks that. That's like saying you can't be a Bob Marley fan because he's dead. :?

Better yet, your friend can't be a fan of computer games if he wasn't around when Pong was released... follows the same logic.

Even if that were true, don't worry, EA won't stop milking that franchise, ME4 is coming sooner or later

Yes of course it is. For example, it's too late to be a fan of PC gaming because it died in 1999.

Biggest load of bogus I've ever heard. You could play the games 20 years from now on and still call yourself a fan.

Maybe with MP games. You may find out a certain MP game is really fun only to find out there's like literally zero active servers. Other than that, no it's never too late.

Of course the saying of your friend goes wrong. But I find this saying goes exactly right:

I played ME1 two years after it initially came out on the PC... And still became a fan.

You can never stop being a fan of anything - no matter how old that something might be. But, the older something is, the more likely there probably won't be fans like you to interact with.

The_Capitalist
No one can stop you being a fan, but it's possible that others stop being a fan as the time and enthusiasm passed...And this is probably the original meaning of your friend, though he still got it wrong on MEs.
