Bought Quake 4 about 6 months ago or so. It stalled during installation. I tried getting help in numerous places including these forums and Ravensoft's official forums. Nobody could help or offer a solution that actually worked. Returned the game, but could only get an identical game in exchange. Tried the new copy. Same thing. $20 down the drain, and Quake 4 just collecting dust.

Bought Stalker. It worked but was also laggy as hell and buggy for me. Not to mention ugly and boring. Could hardly stick with it for more than an hour at a time without getting too bored to keep playing.

I just bought BFME2 from Bestbuy and now i can't get it to patch and the game keeps killing me for some unknown reason in skirmishes and campaign scenarios. Tried looking on EA's forums and they don't bother offering help there for the many people looking for it.Now I can't evenuninstall the game because it's not letting me for some reason.

Enough of this crap. PC gaming is supposed to be fun, not a job. We shouldn't have to work for a game just to play it.

You obviously don't remember the "good old days" like I do...Ultima 7 anyone? Autoexec.bat/Config.sys? EMManager? Loadhi, etc... ;) Perhaps I'm so old that I'm older than the "old days"?

PC gaming has always had its difficulties due to the insane amount of variation from one computer to the next.

Have you tried re-installing your OS lately? Uninstall and reinstall all your drivers, etc...

ps...you can't say that STALKER being boring is a technical issue :p

for quake 4: try a thourough scan disk on ure HDD. there might be a bad sector or corruption on it causing the installation to fail. also, if possible, try a different disc drive. ive had installations just hang up on me for no apparent reason. different disc drive usually solved the prob.

Stalker: what kind of detail are u running it at? ure spec isnt good enough to run it at max at high resolutions. consider cutting back or upgrading. also make sure u have the latest patch to help with the bugs (though it is a buggy game...i have my fair share of probs).

for BFME are u trying to run update from an auto update feature in the game (i havent played it so i dont know if it has one). if u are trying to autoupdate and it failed it may have corrupted the games data. try and get the manual patch and install that (should be in the support section of the EA website). it might repair the damage and let u uninstall it.

if all else fails then format and reinstall. pretty drastic but sometimes those probs need the nuke solution. just make sure u back up all important data before doing it and make sure u have the install files for XP service pack 2 if ure windows cd doesent already have it.

i hope that helps.

unlucky mate, I have never had any major problems with quake 4, but HOW can you say that stalker is boring! omg it's the scariest game since like...ever :(

But seriously dont just give up, theres a solution to every problem. PC gaming is harder than console gaming but the point is we benefit from (generally) better games in all areas :P so dont quit lol developers need your monies!

PC gaming can be frustrating, and as technology advances, it brings along its own new frustrations. Furthermore, as many titles are released on multiple platforms, the PC version often receives the short end of the stick. Console games are easier to optimize, and it allows developers to spend more time on gameplay and less time on hardware testing and configuration issues.

But it's also arguably very rewarding, and as another poster mentioned, even in the days of yore, we had to do a lot of work to get some games to run. Games now are generally easier to install and play, though many recent games have been particularly buggy. I sincerely hope that new Games for Windows standards will help rectify some of those issues, and that as Windows Vista and DirectX 10 become standard, that PC gaming will again herald a new dawn of quality.

Your CPU and video card are beginning to age. And the x800 series is not aging well I might add.

I would also run memtest. There is a version that runs in windows and can tell you if you have bad RAM. If so then run the version of memtest from memtest.org on each module.

That is nothing compared to the 80's and 90's era PC games. Those things take an degree in engineering to setup. Now you just install and play. I love PC games but you have to know your limitations when it comes to PC games. Be it mods, installation, patching, drivers, compatibility, and whether your PC can handle the game. I've learned the hard way many times as to what I can and can't do. I get screwed over many times when I become too adventerous when it comes to mods. I downloaded some that needed special files or install that just screwed up the game entirely and I had to reinstall it.

What happened to the late 90's early 00's era of PC games? You had Half-Life, System Shock 2, Quake II and Quake III, Deus Ex, Unreal and Unreal Tournament, and a whole mess of other games. I remember when the PC is where gaming was at, a majority of innovative games were made for the PC because they could handle the games. Once the consoles "hit it big", PC gaming has gotten less and less attention and devotion. Its just so sad.

Having two similar issues (patches failing, installation failing) almost sounds like the RAM in your computer is jacked, actually. Have you tried running memtest86+ off a CD or Prime95?

Gawd, the days od DOS ... I remember paying $300 for 16 megs of ram so I could get Wing Commander 3 to work properly... the days!

These days, people must be dling too much porn thus infecting themselves with viruses or their specs aren't up to par for their games not to be working... in other words, getting games to work is a cakewalk compared to the good ol days ...

Seriously, I can not remember the last time I had a problem with a PC game running. To me most errors are users errors. When was the last time you hit a wall trying to get a retail released PC game you BOUGHT personally? The reason I say you bought is because I am not considering mainstream junk. Basically good games.

PC gaming is way bettin imo, i dont know i just cant imagine playing an RTS or even a FPS for that matter on a console, keyboard and mouse, PWNS. Sure u gotta shell out 500 bux every 3 or 4 years to be able to keep playing the new games but so what, u can do so much more with a pc than a console. Also if you do have a high end PC the graphics simply can not compare, PC blows consoles out of the watter, what consoles might consider Hi Res is nothing compared to a pc, a console might run at say the equivalent of around maybe 800x600 (just numbers off top of my head dont know for sure) but on a TV screen, Even High end one, that looks good, a PC often runs over 1600x1200 way more demanding.

I feel this guys pain. It's how I got into PC gaming in the first place, crappy computer and tons of hours with Tech Support plus reading up, trial/error, etc. Now days, computer gaming and benchmarking are my favorite past times. It can definitely be for enthusiasts. Not to mention the cost of constant upgrades. But knowing what a computer can do vs a console is well worth the trouble to me. Getting the best framerate at the highest graphic possible is a blast. The hard work pays off in the long run in my book. Its like buying a stock shelby mustang 500, great performance right out of the lot, but even better with tweaking, tuning, and a few accesories to get that much more out of it. Who wants to drive the slower of the two? Anyway, I can definitely understand your frustration. There must be a ton of people who feel this way, cuz here in KC, most local stores sell fewer and fewer computer games every day. It's discouraging. I hope my fellow PC gamers will keep the faith and keep PC gaming alive.

I agree with my fellow 'oldies', PC Gaming has never been easier. And given the massive complexity of modern game engines, it's a wonder as to why there aren't more bugs. Also PC gaming has one over all the consoles, with maturing APIs for GPU/PPU parallel processing powering ever more complex physics effects.

PC gaming has been always superior, hence more troublesome. Some don't like it. I love it. Bring on the bugs and glitches I say!

ive only had a few problems with pc gaming, and they were all because my computer sucked. i made a new one. havent had any problems for years. on another note, ive had two ps2s fail me. plus console games just dont do it for me. they enver develope communities and i hate using the joysticks in shooters because it feels like youre moving as slow as a snail. try buying a new hard drive and video card. your other stuff seems fine.

wait i just realized something. isnt GTO like a laptop video card? "well theres your problem." i think i might be wrong about that but anyway a budget video card like that isnt gonna run much well at all. the installation thing is your harddrive, so do as i said before, cept now i KNOW its hardware.

LOL @ the "it's your graphics card" replies. My problems with Q4 and BFME2 are that Q4 freezes during installation and BFME2 won't patch and keeps auto ending matches for an unknown reason. None of that is graphics card related, geniuses! Pfft, some of you just blame the person's PC's because you don't know what you're talking about and want to make excuses for PC gaming. Sorry, I know enough about my PC to know when's it's the problem and when the problem is the game. You obviously don't even know what a graphic's card is for...

Biggest difference for me from the DOS gaming days is the web. Now days when I have trouble with a game I hit Google, couple searches, read a few forums and I've got (likely) solutions. When I first started gaming you had tech support (sometimes for fee, frequently M-F business hours) dial up to a BBS if you were lucky, or slog through it yourself.

i have problems with my computer, but i know that they are viruses, i know where they came from, ive broken all of them and just have crappy error messages with no performance hit. It sounds like ur computer has problems, not the games or the media they are pressed on. Id say most poeple who own a PC don't know how to maintain them, butidsaythisistheeasiestthey'veeverbeen.

[QUOTE="RazorGR"]PC gaming probably isn't for you. Try a console.Skeptomania

Doesn't seem ike it anymore. I miss the good ole days when I could buy a game, install it and just play it!

I remember the good old days when it took me over an hour to properly configure autoexec.bat:D

Actually, when I bought Quake 4, I had the same problem with installation. When I checked which graphics cards were compatible with the game, mine wasnt in the list unfortunately...when I upgraded, I installed and ran Quake 4 just fine. So, yeah, PC gaming can suck with all of the tech issues, but when it comes right down to it, I think an upgrade in your video card/anything else for that matter would help a ton.

What are you talking about? How does a graphics card cause the installation to freeze? The graphics card I have IS supported by the game and i DID play the demo with no problems. "Upgrade your graphics care" continues to be the answer for people who don't have a clue what they're talking about.

Nobody actually knows how to fix issues with PC games anymore. The industry now has conditioned customers to just throw money at a problem everytime something isn't working.

THis is what happens when you ask for help when having a problem playing a PC game anymore: "What's the you say? The game keeps crashing? Buy a new graphics card! Maybe 2! And while you're at it buy a physics card and a quad core proccessor!"

Buh bye PC gaming.

I have to agree that people are spoiled by the simple "double-click". I was taught the basics of DOS when I was a fewish years old. Basics being installing, setup, how to change drives, looking up directorys... /dirW? meh... I forgot most, if not all of it.

Generally if a game isn't working right then there are a number of things that you can try. Updating drivers, patching, search the web, reinstalling it, check to see if something is preventing it from running... like a firewall. I remember my mum was saying someone was hacking the computer when one of the firewall(S) blocked her from running WoW... lol.

Yes, upgrading the video card could have something to do with it. Sometimes a video card is TOO advanced for the game... kind of like Magic Carpet... super fast CPU = a game so fast that you can't play it... but thats CPUs.

I don't really know how to fix broken games since I haven't really run into any. Normally the game runs or doesn't run. Daikatana was unplayable on a Geforce 2 but runs just fine on an FX5200... ONI just crashes on me... yeah... then again, I think ONI was a PS1 port or something... pff...

So, don't let the proverbial door make you take it up the butt on the way out.

Did you ever try doing a fresh install of windows? What operating system do you have?

The problem is most likely on YOUR end, not the games.Considering that it has been happening with other games it's very possible that your RAM might actually be the issue here.

BTw acting ignorant really won't help your problem at all.

I have a P4 3.6HT 2GB RAM, 8800 GTS 640mb, running on XP Pro SP2... Stalker runs great on max settings as does Quake 4. It maybe your running applications upon boot.. I have only 12 processes running.. You may want to try Black Viper's XP Tweaks for Services.

Bought Quake 4 about 6 months ago or so. It stalled during installation.

I don't see any PC specs posted here. STALKER is a no brainer but after getting two copies of quake 4 i would look at my hardware. I think perhaps you have a faulty harddrive. So either give up or go about coughing up the cash for good components. Any warrenty still available?
