Hello,
Whenever I try to start the game Half life 2 or any of its mods, it says "preparing to launch ..." and nothing happens. When I bring up taskmanager, hl2.exe has started, but nothing happens onscreen. Already, I have:

-updated my driver for graphic card and have DX 9.0c
-validated game, cache, defrag
-have the latest steam version

On the other hand, CounterStrike works fine on my machine. I suspect it's not the problem with Steam but more with software and XP.
Help?

Thanks

www.steampowered.com is your best bet for finding a solution, they have an extensive knowledge base. My friend had an issue once that if his desktop wasn't 1024x768 CSS wouldn't load.

I have tried asking in forums and looked through the self-support center, unforunately with no avail.

Delete the cache of HL2, but make sure to back up your .cfg files and your save games, you can also try to clean the windows register (obviously use an app for that).

its probably a resolution problem, happened with me

go into all progams, and right click hl2 icon, select properties, and go into compatibility and select run in 680*420

that might work

It almost seemed like it would have worked. When I did that on desktop hl icon (640x480) the screen turned black (as if it were starting) then it returned to "preparing to launch" and then, nothing... Hl2.exe started on task manager.

"C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 220

try that for your target in properties

RegSeeker is the one I use. Make sure, that you back up your registry.

Strange, it was already set as such.
