I've played starcraft before. Sins of A Solar Empire looks interesting, would you recomend it over DoW 2?

Play some demos and just pick what you like. I'd also reccomend:

World in Conflict, Homeworld 1/2, Rome: Total War

I definitely would, however they're both very different games.

Dawn of War 2 is a great game and will work great as an intro to RTSs IMO. Then you could go into more complex games like Sins, Warcraft 3, Starcraft and others.

I would suggest DoW 2 as a game to buy anyway.

Rome is a great game although complicated and may take a couple restarts of the game before you can get the hang of things and get a succesful empire going

i never thought of the Total war series as a good intro to rts genre. it's rather more in depth than many want to go.

I've played civilization and enjoyed it thoroughly. I don't believe Total War will be horribly more in depth then that title.

Rome:Total War Gold Edition is also on sale at Direct2Drive for $5. You really can't go wrong with that kind of price.

Get Rome Total War. I think Sins is a terrible overrated game, which involves no tactics or management during battles. Rome on the other hand relies heavily on tactics to win battles.

THIS. If you are new to the genre, you will appreciate these games ALOT. Age Of Empires II is still my favorite RTS to this date. Nothing else has been able to capture the epic empire building side of gameplay. Graphics are a bit out dated, but if you can handle Starcraft, you can definitely handle AoE II. If you do pick it up, make sure to play with some friends. Oh god, I feel the nostalgia boiling up.

Edit: Also, If the graphics are too outdated for you, pick up AoE III. It's empire building isn't as good but it is still a kickass game with gorgeous graphics.

Alright fellas, let me fill you in on a couple of herewith undisclosed facts. My I3 vaio laptop boasts a NVidia 310m.

After looking at some of the reviews for this card I am beginning to doubt whether i can run DoW2 at all. The downloads 77% done so i'll know for sure within the hour, but any insight is appreciated.

Rome is really good. Total war games are a lot different then civilizations, but have a few similarities.

I find Total War to be a bit too slow and anti climatic at times. The sheer size of the battles probably does it for me. I also find gathering resources to be addicting. But a good choice would probably be Company of Heroes. it has a very nice online community and the game is pretty good.

you shouldnt judge depth by the length but civilization games go for longer than that consistently
