My cpu has been running extremely hot- or i think it is. Its running at most up to 86 C on some cores while playing BF3. I don't know what to do, i switchted up the air flow and fans, the cpu fan seems to be working fine. I have a 3570 k and running at stock, seems pretty cheap of intel to screw me over with a heat issued cpu. Is it still safe to keep going? Is it not suppose to shut off when it becomes unsafe?

Also if you could recommend me a software to measure the heat on my 7950 xfx

Those are some insane temps. Are you sure you have the heatsink mounted correctly? Did you also check for any dust?

Dust? Did you fit the CPU? Maybe the thermal paste was applied badly.

You should get a better cooler anyway, stock is a waste of a k cpu.

Run prime95 and see what your max temp is. BF3 multiplayer can actually put some cpus at 100% workload compared to most games, in which case 86c is an acceptable temperature. If prime95 makes your cpu start throttling at 100c, then you should definitely consider getting a new cooler.

My cpu gets to 100c on prime95 all the time and it's fine. 2600k @ 1.52v w/ LLC set to extreme so on load it gets to 1.56 volts.

Same for my 6 year old qx6700 and it still works, it's on in the computer at my apt.
It's had at least 4 years of on time, and at really high voltage that everyone said was dangerous.

Keep in mind laptop cpus/gpus get to get to 100c all the time (and while they are binned higher), they live fine unless they used shoddy lead free solder like nvidia did a few years ago.

There is no reason why your temps need to be that high with half way decent cooling . Also 80C+ temps is not safe and you taking a chance of shorting the lifespan max temp before throttling for i7 2600k is 95C however Intel recomend a max of 72C for the Tcase (whole cpu) Then with the qx 6700 safe temp is 73C.

Yes, that's fine. If you put your cpu at 100% load all the time, then it would be a problem. That isn't really realistic unless you are compiling/rendering something for days. OP should really just rune prime95 and check his temps. If it stays below 92c it should be fine.

Do you really that much voltage to get it to run at 4.5 GHz?

currently ti have stopped gaming on the tense cpu games- so i am basically playing civ 5 or xcom for now, which makes my cpu stay at the high 60s and low 70s

I would get a aftermarket cooler, what case do you have?

Yeah, that does seem extremely high. My old 45nm e8400 C2D only needs 1.53v at 4.5GHz...

4.8, I forgot to update.

I have a bad chip.

Simply take off the cooler, clean both the CPU's back and the cooling block's foot and re-apply the thermal paste.  A drop the size of a small pea should suffice.
