Oblivion is a very good test also try company of heroes. If you can max those games out at high resolution that means you have a very good rig.

Call of Jaurez is very pretty and also very demanding on most systems, especially with foliage and terrain detail cranked way up.  Awesome game in its own right as well.

Oblivion is not really the most fun game around IMHO, but with mods and such the game looks pretty good.  Call of Juarez is pretty fun.  Until all the upcoming PC games come out I play mostly CS: Source and Guild Wars cranked to 16xAA and 16xAF with absolutely every ingame setting maxed and as many quality config settings as I can muster.

Call of Juarez (if you rename the exe to oblivion.exe you can enable AA with HDR and it looks spectacular),  Oblivion with all the graphics mods , STALKER can look damn good if you edit the user.ltx file and enable Global Illumination and motion blur (have to add -mblur to the to the launch icon though),  X3 (still looks real pretty to me).  You have to download the Human Head demo from the Nvidia site it is incredible.

F.E.A.R. Combat (free multiplayer game, some of the best atmospheric and particles effects around)

Far Cry (cheap at Wal-Mart)

Oblivion looks UGLY compared to many other games, though some of the environments are OK.

Here's one of Far Cry :)

1680x1050 and maxed out. :) (8x super-sampling antialiasing, 16x anistropic filtering, etc)

Couldn't agree more.   Seems strange to say considering how old it is, but Far Cry is still has some amazing graphics.

Hmm.. Try supreme commander. That game is hard to max out... but with the 8800gtx you should be able to max out anything, probably even Crysis when it comes out.. lol.

Without mods, Oblivion doesn't look amazing.  Fully maxed out, STALKER looks excellent.  Chronicles of Riddick looks great, as does Prey (though Prey sucks).  Quake 4 has great visuals.

You are absolutely right in terms of style, but I think some of the above mentioned games now surpass the mighty Far Cry.

There's a lot of great games for graphics listed above. I'd highly recommend STALKER and Splinter Cell: Double Agent, both have great graphics in their own right.

well if you can wait, I would advise you wait for crysis, i'm aware you said released games thats why I stated "if you can wait" :P but yeah that if you can wait, if you can't then oblivion, far cry indeed has very nice graphics, C&C 3: Tiberium Wars or Company of Heroes.

I still think doom 3 looks better then anything out right now besides Gears of War. And I'm running on a 8800GTX and maxed out games such as FEAR/Elder scrolls.

What are you talking about? Oblivion doesn't look great? Yes it does... not accounting the ugly terrain in the distance but anything close looks great.

The more smooth Oblivion runs the uglier it looks to me. It looked fantastic on my 7800GT because the game ran like crap, but then I got a 8800 and of course enabled pretty much everything and it looked like blargh. Pretty weird ...

If you want Oblivion to look as beautiful as it should (read: not with the crappy textures provided so the 360 could run it) go download Qarl's Texture Pack 3.  Its hefty at a few gigabytes, but it essentially reworks every texture in the game into double or triple its original detail.

Also, I am not sure what the names are of the mods, but there are some good distance level-of-detail fixes out there that get rid of tiling and make the distant landscape seem more vibrant.  There are also some water mods and sky mods.

I also recommend the high-res facial textures...makes faces look twice as good!

All those fancy mods loaded on really start to tax any system, but its worth it.

PS on a side note, I recommend backing up the whole "data" folder prior to modding Oblivion so you dont need to reinstall the game in case a mod stops working or messes your game up.

Good advice - it greatly improves Oblivion's graphics.  But I am still not convinced that modded-Oblivion is the best looking game out there right now.  Some scenes in Quake 4 blow me away, as do some scenes in STALKER.

Vanguard, try Vanguard with highest settings. If you can run this with a 25+ fps you have a VERY GOOD computer.

With an 8800GTX don't get Double Agent.  It ran nicely on my computer but the moment I put in my 8800GTX all the graphics went to hell.  This apparently is happening to a lot of people with the 8800 series even with the latest patch and drivers.

there is a way to bypass this. create a shortcut of the splintercell4.exe file and add at the end of the target -ll. (those are l's, like lion, not 1's nor I's). For example target: "C:\Games\SC4\splinterCell4.exe" -ll. Great visuals...

Agree with fear, oblivion, stalker etc. Also try the lost planet demo. The game isn't out yet, but you can still rig your pc.

Company of Heroes if you want to showcase.  Awesome effects and you can scroll in for cool animations and detail.  I'm getting a 8800GTX on Friday and can't wait to max it out.

Also agree with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Oblivion (modded).

I can max Company of Heros on my AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 2 gigs of rams and a 7950GT.   I don't think Company of Heros is a way to test your computer.

Awesome looking games i'd say are

--Supreme Commander on max (experimentals look amazing...and by max i mean 16xAA highest res you can handle and everything else maxed.  Seeing the reflections in experimental armor is very cool)

--Infernal - fun action game and it looks quite good maxed out.

--Command and Conquer 3 looks pretty good maxed out.

--Stalker isn't too bad for visuals.  Not stunning imo though

I'd say strictly on looks supreme commander and infernal are 2 of the best looking atm.

FEAR, Company of Heroes, and some others are good looking as older games but definetely not omg wow looking compared to some more modern games.

My Rig:

Intel QX6700 2.66ghz (Quad)

2gb Corsair Dominator ram

160gb Raptor hdd

EVGA 8800GTX KO

i am gonna say CoH,Stalker, and Oblivion.but what are your other spec?even if you are using 8800GTX,but if your other part is not so good,it is useless(just use Intel core to Extreme and Corsair RAM 4x1GB DDR3 1333 PC-10000 CL7 Dominator)

Infernal, don't by that clunky game, but if you want to see the visuals, just try the demo.  The voice acting, facial animations, etc. are all horrible, but it does have some nice lighting and shader effects.
