Games with active online communities? (Other than FPS!)

Hey there, I was just taking a look at a few threads asking for suggestions on good multiplayer games on the PC and I couldn't help but notice that most if not all the games recommended were FPS. Now I just recently built my first real gaming PC not too long ago, and one of the main reasons I did so was due to the diversity of games and the main reason: the online community!

This Steam sale was perfect for me and I picked up a lot of games that I missed out on or wanted to try but I realized that, for the most part, there were no fairly recent games other than FPS that have much of an active online community left. Where'd the diversity go? It's always "TF2, CSS, L4D, CoD, BF". Where are the games like PSO, RTS like WC, etc. It's all FPS, and mostly military-based ones at that. I'm not the least bit interested in CoH simply because of the setting and World in Conflict I was willing to give a chance but guess what? I hear it's dead. I know there's MMORPGs, but anything other than WoW is not really worth mentioning, and I'm not really into that unless I'm with friends. Games like PSO are more what I prefer in terms of online RPGs.

Now I'm enjoying all of these games but I've really been trying to search for a game(s) in other genres that has a strong online community, and something I might enjoy for a long time to come. Again I'll make the examples like WC3 and PSO. There's a lot of other games as well that I played, but it's late and I can barely remember. So suggestions please, perhaps games that you guys play yourselves that may not be the most popular, but you think I'd like and maybe even show me the ropes.

I may come off as being too picky but as it is now, it seems the words online game is synonymous with the FPS genre, unless I haven't dug deep enough. I realize I can just play PSO and WC3, but I was really hoping there would've been something new out by now that I could move on to. ANY other genre is fine! Help me out guys!
