Looking for a game, which is probably gonna end up an RPG, in which having a shield is a reasonable strategy. Other than Dark Souls, if there is something else...

I really liked the mechanic of Skyrim's first person blocking but in reality, I found it a waste of time. Even on Master it would be faster to just attack the enemy with your weapon till he dies rather than using "tactical blocks". Even with dragons it was easier to just run out of the way of their attacks than raising your shield...

So, is there any game of this sort?

P.S.: If nothing else, I also accept blocking with other weapons. Basically, I want a game where DEFENSIVE approach is viable and not plain useless and no, I don't want cover-based whatever...

Would Vindictus count? It works well in Dragon Age as well. Mount & Blade: Warband would be my #1 though.

Any decent fighing game you can think of will have blocking mechanics. But probably not with a shield....

I think Blade of Darkness could be count as one if it wasn't for the fact that shields get destroyed in it so fast.

We could also add Dark Souls ... and the topic is complete.

ShimmerMan

If it doesn't have to be with a shield, I would then recommend: Zeno Clash.

It is a first person melee game. (very little shooting) It has an awesome soundtrack, a unique artsyle, world/setting, and story. Its just short.

The Witcher 2 has a high emphasis on blocking. Although it uses a sword. The combat is quite skillful and defensive. If you go in just hacking like a madman you will die.

probably not reallly what you're looking for (and it might be similar to cover-based things), but it came to mind:
the Support cIass in Battlefield 2142 has a deployable shield that he and his team can use as cover!

yeah!

He said besides Dark Souls in the OP. Otherwise, that would have been my first suggestion :P

Dark Messiah. You certainly don't have to use a shield, but if you play a melee style character, the sword/shield combo is a very viable option.

Prince of Persia 3D (although I might be the only one who enjoyed that game).
