Horrayyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!

After some messing with the game and detailed benchmarking, I am happy to give you guys the good news: This game is not at all intensively CPU dependent.

I have run various benchmarks with various settings. Two are of most importance. I am mentioning it below. Both are with exactly the same in-game settings. The only difference is the first one runs with all 4 cores of my CPU and the 2nd one runs with core 3 and 4 disabled for GTA 4, meaning it only runs on the first 2 cores in 2nd benchmark. These benchmarks were taken by the GTA4 in-game benchmarking tool. The good thing was while playing the game, my FPS never dropped below 30 whether it is with 2 cores or 4 cores. Also note that my CPU is running at 2.9 GHz instead of 2.4GHz as the benchmarks show.

==============================
With 4 cores (forced 4xAA super sampling)
==============================

Statistics
Average FPS: 48.71

CPU Usage: 73%
System memory usage: 75%
Video memory usage: 100%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1600 x 1200 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: High
Render Quality: Very High
View Distance: 50
Detail Distance: 100

Hardware
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3, v.5657
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX+
Video Driver version: 180.48
Audio Adapter: Sound Blaster Audigy
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

File ID: benchmark.cli

======================================
With 2 cores (AA set to default in nvidia control panel)
======================================

Statistics
Average FPS: 42.26
Duration: 37.38 sec
CPU Usage: 53%
System memory usage: 76%
Video memory usage: 100%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1600 x 1200 (60 Hz)
Texture Quality: High
Render Quality: Very High

================================================== ==============
There is a weird thing though: See the CPU usage in both and you'll find that it is lower in the later benchmark with 2 cores disabled. May be it was because of forced super sampling 4X AA in the first test.

I have some pictures that show nice graphics will all these high settings and resolutions, but I don't know a photo hosting site that would allow me to post at 1600*1200 resolution. Although GTA4 look much nice with these settings, still it looks mediocre as compared to crysis. There are jaggies all around, though minimized greatly at this resolution and settings.

So what's the problem. The only thing I did was:
1) Putting Shadow density to 0 in game settings. If you notice carefully, the game looks better with setting shadow density to 0.
2) Putting -norestriction in the shortcut to GTA4 launcher.

The 2nd thing mentioned above allows you to set any settings that you want for graphics unlike the default game which would limit you for choosing higher resolutions and/or high textures. Thats why I manager to pull off the settings so high.

Its all a little technical for me but I am glad you're getting better performance from the game! Surely they are going to release a patch with some of these fixes soon!

I'd think that would be this one... 2) Putting -norestriction in the shortcut to GTA4 launcher.

Do you think I can run the game in 1920x1200 if I tone down some settings and use your "tweaks"? No AA needed if it takes the FPS down much.

This should be my system:

Microsoft Windows XP Home 32bit

Service Pack 3, v.5657 (Not sure)

Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS G92 512Mb

Video Driver version: (Dunno - newest I presume.)

Audio Adapter: (Don't know =l)

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9459 @ 2.66GHz 1333FSB

You'll get a massive frame rate increase by turning off the clip recorder from the game menu.

Turning the clip recorder off doesn't makes any changes. I've set it off and still getting 25-30 fps.

well you have a 9800gtx, so it's going to pick up some slack. Also the in game benchmarks is really not a great indicator of game performance. Downtown on the second island in the rain + action + chinatown whill drop your frames lower than the benchy does.

Textures on high, Render quality on high, View distance is 30, Detail distance 100 and vehicle density is 70. Its a smooth minimum FPS for the most part. Still a piss poor port, a game shouldnt require you to spend more time tweaking than gaming to enjoy it!

No, at that resolution you will be limited by your GPU. When I play at 2048*1536, I start facing "missing textures" problems. Although the frame rates remain almost same, but I can't see any textures.

OK. So now I raised the render quality to maximum instead of very high and it drops 2-3 FPS, but now the game really looks much much better than it was when i first started at 1280*768 with low textures. For the first hour of game play, my FPS have been at an average of 35 and at minimum it went to 29.

Are you sure that AA works in the game? Like did you see any image quality difference or did you just check the results? When i force AA in the nvidia control panel it doesn't apply ingame. I got the beta drivers too.

Hey guys,

I cant figure this one out for the life of me...but then again I'm not that computer adept. I downloaded the new Nvidia patch, I set Shadow density to 0, turned off the clip recorder, set textures to low and res down to 1280 x 720, and with my specs I feel like I shoud be doing waaay better than 7fps??? PLEASE anyone help me with any tips!!

Check this out:

Statistics
Average FPS: 7.74
Duration: 37.71 sec
CPU Usage: 39%
System memory usage: 52%
Video memory usage: 95%

Graphics Settings
Video Mode: 1280 x 720 (70 Hz)
Texture Quality: Low
Render Quality: Low
View Distance: 25
Detail Distance: 37

Hardware
Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Service Pack 3
Video Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS
Video Driver version: 180.84
Audio Adapter: PreSonus FireBox Out Main 1/2
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

Is it the video card? Im not exactly expecting 60 fps but even 20 would be nice, this isnt even playable. I just dont get it...it seems abysmally low.

one of mines its a core 2.4, 3gb ddr3 ram, and a ge-force 7300le (lamer), vista ux64sp1

the game runs horrible, like 7fps, all detail minimum, and after a while the camera moves in "drunk" effect, every car i get on get the engine smoked ( only when i drive it ) and the brakes dont work ... is there a tool for gta4 performance? or someting that decrease the shaders ( i think that the ge73 sucks too ) and something to delete the cameraand driving problems? please

Quad Core @3.66

2x8800GT's in SLi

4GB RAM.

Still can't get textures to high, or res to 1900x1200.

Mostly because R* is full of a bunch of idiots who FORGOT SLI SUPPORT.

I wan't to punch them all in the face.

Maybe, just MAYBE people wouldn't pirate games if companies like R* didn't release crappy half-assed ports that weren't worth the gas to the store.

I heard that the drunk cam and the smoking engine is caused from the pirated version ( I cannot indepently verify that because I didn't download GTAIV because I think it is wrong).

Also if you are complaining because you bought the game, that is one thing but when you download it and complain about the bugs and it not running for you, don't expect any sympathy.

The bugs in the pirate version are all over the GFAQ forum, not too hard to pick up on it. If you pirate, you don't get to complain. Fix your own ****
