So I have beaten game titled "I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream" quite some time ago. If you don't know about it - It's rather old Psychological Horror Point&Click game for DOS systems.

I have loved pretty much every aspect of it despite I have never really played any Point&Click games.

My question is - Do you know any games with really dark plots/disturbing stories? I want something that will totally shock me and break all taboos :D And I don't want any "Jumpscare" type games. I want something that will focus on story (I won't mind few jumpscares thou. ).

Idk if that's important but I have been enjoying gaming creepypasta too.

Only thing I have is my PC laptop with rather medium specs. If you know any old games that could be emulated on it - I'm not disgusted by old graphics.

Manhunt comes to mind or condemn criminal origins.

For me it is Alan Wake. This game has a interesting dark plot (like a plot by Stephen King) and dark atmosphere.

I didn't play "I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream". Is this game like a short story by Harlan Ellison?

FEAR, Clive Barker's Undying, the upcoming SCORN, Bioshock series can be disturbing at some places.

Agony, another up coming PC game would likely fit the bill, really no idea what kind of specs will be required though.

Thank you all for responding!

I'll for sure try out "Condemned: Criminal Origins" it seems like an ideal game for me. These melee mechanics are my "gaming fetish" :D. Manhunt has just perfect climate but it seems really repetitive and those stealth segments look kinda stupid XD

@innergame Yes. IHNMAIMS as a game is basically an expansion to the short story. If you have enjoyed the story - game is a must-have. It's much longer and for me it was way more disturbing. Voice acting is 11/10 and soundtrack is quite good (I can't stop listening to it personally but i haven't seen similar opinion. I haven't seen anyone criticizing it thou. ). Game is really cheap and you can get it on GOG/Steam nearly for free.

Spec Ops: The Line is pretty twisted.

The original Max Payne had some pretty disturbing aspects to it as well.

tbh I've always found Warhammer 40K a bit disturbing; you have this "immortal" emperor in charge of countless worlds and even more countless people, fighting mutants and chaos and heresy, and they are willing to destroy entire planets (pretty much commit genocide) to defeat their enemy. The way the Empire is so brainwashed into servitude is spooky as well, and how they turn people into Space Marines is wicked crazy, then if one of them falls they can entomb them into combat walkers where they have to serve after death, more or less. It's like Hitler and Kim Jun Il had a baby together. "Oh, the orks are invading? Well, I don't feel like getting my boots dirty, let's just carpet bomb the entire planet with nukes and write it off..."

@Gamerno6666 System Shock 2 will for sure find a place in my Steam library. Thanks! I don't really like sci-fi climates but sure I love RPG-s especially with good character building.

Unimportant jet funny thing: Trailers for I Have no Mouth and SS2 look nearly the same despite they are completely different games. Authors of these trailers have for sure copied themselves.

EDIT: Oh, okay - they have the same publisher XD

What's dark and disturbing to some might be a sunny walk in the park for others so with that in mind...

F.E.A.R series

the evil within

doom 3

even Fallout 3 could be said to be somewhat dark and disturbing

the suffering has to be one of the best games in this category for story, horror and gameplay. Its about a man who killed his wife and child and is sent to prison on an island where they did horrific things to the prisoners which determines what kind of enemy they are. You have to choose between good and evil on the game. I highly recommend it.

Wow. I have seen the demo of Works of Mercy very long time ago. I was thinking about what happened to this project. It comes in three weeks. I have seen some dude playing this like 2 years ago. If that worked for him - maybe my computer will be enough too.

Okay. I'm just being an idiot here. N00b question. Is there any possibility that this game would run? (I guess not. ). I usually play quite old games so I just have a silent hope that minimum requirements are often exaggerated. There seems to be a problem with my processor and graphics adapter. It's probably also worth mentioning that it's a laptop but you can guess it from GPU. (But idk what will happen if I'll try to force it to run under low resolution or something. ).

Game's Minimum requirementss:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7, 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1) or 64-bit Windows 1
  • Processor: Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz / AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
  • Memory: 6 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660 / AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870

My Specs:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7,
  • Processor: Intel CPU Core i5-4200M 2.50GHz,
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM,
  • Graphics: Nvidia GeForce GT 740M

I have enjoyed the story very much! Thanks, I'm going to play IHNMAIMS in this month. Its price is good.

Doki doki literature club. It's a seriously dark game and its free on steam. You need to ha e your game file open in a window so you can keep an eye on it. Best play it without knowing anything about it, but it's defo worth sticking out cus it gets very very dark!

@Jshoelace: Yes, I have played Doki-Doki. Not as disturbing as I was expecting + Steam noted that I have played anime dating game... I mean - it's not bad but it's annoying when like 50% of recommended are games of these type.
