A lot of you may already know about this but the Black Mesa Dev Team from the modding community is coming out with a complete remake of Half Life 1 using the Source engine. The game is called Black Mesa and will be free. You need to own a Source game to play it. Release date is not confirmed but the devs said it will come out in 2009. A likely release date is November 19th since that was the release date of the original Half Life 1 game.

Follow the mod here. http://www.moddb.com/mods/black-mesa

For those unfamiliar with mods, theyre basically full games made using an existing engine. Counter-strike and Day of Defeat started out as free mods but went retail.

You actually think it's going to be fully free? Valve will almost 100% definitely make sure that the mod is unplayable unless you buy Half Life Source.

Ive asked many people if they knew about mods, and 8/10 didnt know what I was talking about. Not everyone on this forum has 9k posts and lives revolving around video games.

Not to be ungrateful, but I think everyone here is familiar with mods. And yeah, it's gonna be great when (if) it releases.

That is bs. Valve isnt going to have anything to do with this mod besides the hiring of the modders.

And I can guarantee you lots of people dont know about mods. Unless a mod is put on Steam, only a small number of people will play it from the modding community.

Reason why it's being made for/was created on "Half Life 2" and IS a "HL 2" mod that uses absolutely nothing from HL/HL:S and it will probably be released as a standalone Source mod like Insurgency, Age of Chivalry, etc. The only thing you might have to buy here is the mod itself if they decide to gain something from all their hard work (IF you don't already have HL2 or any other Source game).

Says who? The game doesnt even use anything from Half Life: Source. Are you talking out of your ass?

If Valve was going to have any beef with the mod they would have spoken out LONG ago. The dont really care about HL:S because it was only a freebee given away with HL2 game of the year.

The free version of Half-Life 2: Deathmatch does not come with the Source SDK Base.

We're not idiots. So we know.

Couple of things people should know:

It needs a game with the source SDK (TF2, Portal, etc.)

It WILL be released over Steam.

It is approximately 6 or so gb uncompressed.

I think it be released on the same day as the original Half-Life (November 19th). Makes sense to me.

That would be good if it's released then. I'll be busy with this, L4D 2, and Battlefield Bad company PS3 beta all in the same week.

The thing is, Half Life and Half Life Source still SELL. I'm not sure how, or why, but those games sell pretty decently. Not great, they are old after all, but Valve still makes a little money off them. Valve are NOT going to stand by and let a mod team give one of their games away for free. They will step in some point towards the end (if there ever is an end, I swear that mod team should work for Valve considering their amazing scheduling skills) and say "You know, we would like to make this require Half Life/Half Life Source." Yes, it uses no assets from those two games, it is a brand new remake, but that doesn't mean Valve can't tie them in together, since the source engine requires steam open to launch now-a-days anyway, so they could easily tie that to one/both of those games.

There aren't "Any other" source mods that have 1) Gotten this much press attention (well, it got a lot of attention when the trailer came out a year ago) 2) Been a remake of a Valve game.

If they want money then yes Valve will do something, will have to do because it's about copyright if they want to sell Valve "stuff" if not they (Valve) can't do a thing to stop them or change the way they want the game to be played, but so far they say it'll be free.

And HL:S is redundant, there's no way for it to be a requirement for the mod, 100% sure of it, IF they would sell it, all they can do is set a price to please both the "devs" and Valve, but to buy "specific" Valve games like HL:S...no way.

Like any mod for any game, you will need to own a game built on the engine the mod was based on. Any source engine game will do. That's how mods work. However, Half Life source will not be a requirement.

Most PC gamers are well aware of what mods are, especially PC gamers on this forum (or any gaming forum for that matter). It's kind of hard to post on this forum and not be aware of what a mod is considering that mods get talked about a lot on here. In fact, Black Mesa Source has been getting posted about on a regular basis ever since it was announced way back in 2004. Hence the reason people are mocking you right now. We've been very well aware of what BMS is for five years now.

Do you honestly think that if people went out and remade the EXACT game with better graphics, using Valve's new engine. That Valve wont go "Wait... hold on." and they'll just let it slide? Oooh, there goes... All of HL's potential sales, however small they may be. Not going to happen, Valve wont let this go... I bet that they just expect this mod to crash and burn, then valve can come along and make it.

We'll have to wait and see who's right, of course, but I've never known valve to act in that fashion, and such an act would be an unprecedented act of aggression towards modders everywhere from a very mod friendly dev. It wouldn't make sense on any level for valve to pull such a stunt.

From the looks of the mod so far. I wouldn't mind if I had to pay for it. People put hard work into it, its good, they deserve rewards. If it turns out as good as I think it will I wouldn't mind paying $50 for it. Of course though I would prefer it to be free and hope they who control this aren't reading this.

Dude, Valve has been on record since HL:S came out that they wouldn't interfere with a Half-Life remake. In fact, they encouraged modders to remake Half Life. Valve basically said that the reason they didn't put any effort into a Half-Life: Source is because it was just to get new players introduced to the HL universe before playing HL2, and that they were "sure" that the fans would create at least one remake by and for themselves without Valve needing to do anything.

Valve is one of the most mod friendly devs out there. They don't sue modders, they hire them (see: Team Fortress, Counterstrike, and Day of Defeat). Furthermore, this isn't the first time someone has made what is essentially a full game in the form of a mod for one of Valve's games. Portal: Prelude was released earlier this year and is essentially a free prequel to Portal (the mod is about the same size, if not larger, than the original game, and comes complete with a new plot and voice acting) and Valve didn't bat an eye.

You call it a stunt to want to prevent copying of an entire game, only with newer graphics? Valve does not endorse this "mod". There is a reason for that. I doubt that Valve actually would take drastic measures. But then again, nothing like this has ever happened before. This is more than a mod. It really is a remake of an entire game. It's less a mod than it is a re-imaging.

We'll have to wait and see who's right, of course, but I've never known valve to act in that fashion, and such an act would be an unprecedented act of aggression towards modders everywhere from a very mod friendly dev. It wouldn't make sense on any level for valve to pull such a stunt.

So you're saying if i rewrote WoW's code, then re-released it under "Land of Warcraft" and charged $5 a month instead of $15 a month. That Blizzard wont/shouldn't go "Wait, what do you think you're doing?" the makers of Black Mesa, Stole the Storyline, and all Valve's ideas from the first halflife, which Valve still sells today.. then using Valve's engine, they remade it and they're re-releasing it? Thats direct competition, and stealing of intellectual property. It's like if you took your old Tapes, put all the songs onto a CD(the new format) and gave them away... People own those songs. Just like Valve owns Half life.

[QUOTE="Nibroc420"] Do you honestly think that if people went out and remade the EXACT game with better graphics, using Valve's new engine. That Valve wont go "Wait... hold on." and they'll just let it slide? Oooh, there goes... All of HL's potential sales, however small they may be. Not going to happen, Valve wont let this go... First off, remaking an old game as a new one in a new engine as a mod is NOT a new phenomenon. I can only assume those who think otherwise are new to modding. Furthermore, if you charge money for a mod, it's not a mod anymore, by definition. So yes, blizzard would be pissed if you charged $5 a month for a WoW mod because it would be ILLEGAL.

Edit:

BM uses entirely new assets for most everything in the game. Sounds, models, textures, even voice acting. This is work they did for free, and it is high quality. However, even if a mod only changes minor portions of a game, it is completely legal and encouraged by most good devs as long as it is free and requires the original game to run.

Or Valve could do what they always do, buy the mod and hire the dev :)

Please educate me. What other game has been completely remade on a newer engine and released free of charge with no royalty going to the original makers?

Not to be ungrateful, but I think everyone here is familiar with mods. And yeah, it's gonna be great when (if) it releases.

This. I guess it all depends on Valve at the time. If they're still managing to pump out sales of the original halflife, and at release of this mod their sales drop than they might say/do something. However if Valve sells maybe 1 or 2 copys a month i dont think they'll be concerned.

IMO, taking a game someone made, and then using their new engine to remake it and not paying any royalties must have legal consequences.
