sounds more like an overheating problem, or just a bug with the game and that particular setup.

Thats pretty strange. How full is the hard drive? When was windows last installed on your grandparent's computer?

An old computer that has had windows installed on it for several years on an old hard drive can somtimes cause problems I think...

Try asking this on the offical Bioshock forums under tech support, they probibly know.

Check to make sure High Detail Shaders are OFF, HDS makes me crash no matter what.
But...
It also sounds like a Data Error...
Try reinstalling.

The demo ran smooth for me on a 7600GS AGP card. I was actually surprised it ran so good on my older system. There seems to be quite a few graphic settings on this game. Youmight want to mess around with these and see if it plays any different. If you have a video card that is not up to par and suffering with FPS, this game does have AF set to 4x by default. This can be changed to none by going to the Bioshock.ini file and putting in a 1 to replace the 4 under Anisotropic Filtering.

Are you by chance using AVG ? Because I've had many issues with conflicts between the game and that software. Enough to make me swwitch to AVAST.
