Im just going to put down my favourite unit from each real time strategy game i can think of:
siege tanks from starcraft, won many a fight with them in star craft
terminators from dawn of war (the original release, and a squad with heavy bolters not close combat weapons) not the most powerful of units but they kicked ass
baneblade from the dawn of war expansion 'winter assault'a super heavy tank with what was it, 11 weapons mounted on it? almost unstoppable!
monolith from dawn of wars latest expansion pack 'dark crusade' pretty slow going but its deadly and i prefered the necron faction to the tau's look.
mercenary 18th century dragoons from cossacks - one of the most powerful units in the game thats produced at lightning speed in mercenary form
S.A.R.G.E from Dark Colony, cybernetic soldiers with really long range sniper guns and napalm secondary attack , and they self destruct when dying and sounded pretty cool.
Sonic tanks from Dune 2000, deadly but had to be used carefully if you didnt want to kill your own infantry in one shot
Commando from the original command and conquer, tough one was going t say mammoth tank or flame tank because theyre some memorable units but the commando was just a bad ass.
Cyborgs from CC Tib Sun , the only memorable unit from the game in my view , taller than normal infantry and sporting a chain gun and could even crawl around when it was blown in two and could heal up in tiberium.
tanya from CC red alert 2, alot of interesting and fun units in that game but i picked tanya because she reminded me alot of the commando from the original CC game
Avatar walker mech - quite a unique unit, i mean who doesnt like giant mechs stomping around, this one could cannibilise certain units to upgrade its existing weaponary and was pretty satisfying to use in groups although due to gameplay balance issues it cost too much, was too slow and took too long to build to be used much in multiplayer games.
Air Craft Carriers from Hearts of Iron 2 DD/Armageddon, I found them to be more effective than battleship fleets - true to history I suppose and pretty satsifying using a large naval fleet to bring ruin to the japanese/american/british fleets!
Angel Wing in nexus the Jupiter incident, at the start its a pretty weedy ship but later on it becomes quite powerful and feels rewarding progressing through the game at the beginning leaving the bigger enemy ships to whatever ships you command but then hitting them head on with the angel wing itself.
Perimeter had some interesting units but my favourite from the game was the 'dragon' unit which unleashed a super powerful monster that could destroy the terrain aswell as buildings and units.
from the homeworld series, for me it was the obvious choice of the mothership
In the RTS game Praetorians my favourite unit was the standard Legionaries you would get as the Roman Empire, they kicked ass simply put and didnt consume too many resources compared to the elite units and would make up the mainstay of an army.
Supreme Commander - monkey lord fun unit to use and really powerful took an age to build though
in total annihilation -the CORE 'can' unit, quite big and sort of looked like it wobbled when it moved firing a heavy laser.
Victoria Revolutions - cavalry with hussars brigade, defintely not the most powerful even in the beginnning of the game when cavalry is arguably better than infantry, but the speed and added strength from the hussar brigade made the ideal unit for putting down rebellions - especially if you have a large country or empire (russia,USA,China and britain I found)
Medieval total war 1 favourite unit was the varangarian guard, they would really destroy any infantry they came up against and could handle themselves well even if outnumbered
medieval total war 2 different story , my favourite unit was the english longbowmen , quite deadly and could lay down stakes which i would use online to funnel my opponent into the centre and surround them forming a killing ground.
rome total war favourite unit was the standard roman legionaries with segmenta , not too expensive or overpoweredi felt
in the RTW expansion favourite unit was plumbartarii , comparable to the older legionaries from the original except carrying alot more javelins and darts which made for a very good main element of an army, i would rush one line forward to fight opponents online which would invariably be cheap all berserker armies with some archers and end up winning because the second line would devastate the berserker numbers once they were finally donewith the first line.
empires dawn of the modern world my favourite unit was the German King TigerTank, would just demolish everything if you were quick enoughin teching up and producing them
Age of Empires 1 - the priests , just for converting the enemy units which prooved to be quite fun back on the MSN gaming zone days
Age of Empires 2 - handgunners, pretty deadly when used en masse
