-Dune, for creating the genre
-Command and Conquer: Red Alert (if I had to pick one out of the franchise), for perfecting the fundamentals
-Dark Reign, for being vastly underrated
-Total Annihilation, for being the first epic-scale RTS
-Homeworld, for being the best thing to happen to the genre since its creation
-World in Conflict, for showing gamers that a great epic singleplayer is important in RTSs, even in the 21st century
-Warcraft 2, for making the genre popular
-Ground Control, for showing us that you dont need base building in an RTS (though I think Force 21 came first...not sure)
-Warhammer: Dark Omen, for being the first to give us epic army vs army (like Total War battles) battles in real time, and being damn good to boot

Wow this thread is old.

Best RTS?

Starcraft for being the best competitive RTS ever.

Dune for spear heading the genre.

Dune 2
Command and Conquer: Red Alert
Homeworld

Cant decide which of the above I like best, but those are my top 3. Though nostalgia might be speaking when I mention Dune 2...but damn I remember it being such a fun game.

It's a three-way tie between Starcraft, C&C Red Alert 2, and Total Annihilation.

Homeworld (1 and 2)

Dungeon Keeper (1 and 2)

If Close Combat 2: A Bridge Too Far qualifies as an RTS, I'd put it above both. I get a feeling it's not though.

Starcraft, Age of Empires 2, and WC3 I really cant decide between them. WC3 would dominate easily if you counted Dota... but thats just using the WC3 engine basically... it doesnt have much to do with the game. So of the RTS elements... its very very close. I would probably prefer playing WC3 to either AoE or SC... but admittedly it did come out later so youd hope for instance WC3 would learn from SC and improve

StarCraft. Because of it's balance. Perfectly balaned with very few bugs and the ultimate multiplayer experience.

Dune 2 I guess, since both C&C and Blizzard pretty much copied that formula? (and expanded/tweaked on it) so I think it is the best one, since the formula still works so long after that game was made ^^

Personally I would likely say Dawn of war, or Company of Heroes. I like Relics take on RTS in general, they always try to innovate, and push things alittle further, and those games were really amazing ^^.

Honerbly mention: Warcraft 2 and Starcraft, those two games are very dear to me, going way back to my childhood. I do not consider them the best anymore, but I do consider them insanely good.

Lol, very old thread. I'd say the best RTS of all time for me would be Age of Mythology, although not very popular. Warcraft and Starcraft are really good too, but i dont like the fact that economy is really not a major part of the game. My top 5 would be: 1.Age of Mythology 2.Age of Empires 2 3.Warcraft III 4.Starcraft 5.Rome : Total War

Hehe, yeah, very old thread. My last reply to this thread was back in 2007, so I guess it's time to see what's changed for me in last three years. My answer to the same question is now Red Alert 1, Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance and Sins of a Solar Empire. The first two for exactly the same reasons as before, with the latter substituting Total Annihilation. Again, Red Alert was just a joy to play, while Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance (not the original) is the closest the gaming industry has ever come to creating my dream RTS. Sins of a Solar Empire is another fantastic large-scale RTS. Dawn of War 2 is great fun, but like the original lack lasting appeal for me. Company of Heroes was fun and deep, but I've never really been a fan of micromanagement. World in Conflict was a blast to play, but it sometimes feels more like an action game than a RTS. All lack lasting appeal to me because I prefer macro-RTSs over micro-RTSs. I still hold significant distaste for the original Starcraft. I have not yet played Starcraft II, but intend to do so some time in the future. I have concluded that Supreme Commander was nothing but a $50 paid Beta - Forged Alliance was the game it was supposed to be. I still find it difficult to get into the Total War series, despite the game's core ideas having some appeal to me.
