I am currently using a pair of Corsair Vengeance 1500's, but they are starting to break and are extremely uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time. So I was thinking of going with a good pair of headphones and an aftermarket mic. Any recommendations? What are you guys running?

I'm going to recommend sennheiser. I'm using the $150 hd pro's and they are awesome. Sound is super crystal clear, the only gripe i have is without my audio cards headphone amplifier is has low bass. But their product line in headphones is massive and they are up there for best sounding headphone company. Honestly you can't go wrong with a great quality headphone from sennheiser.

I've been hooked on pioneer since I randomly picked up a pair of SE-M390's for like 80 bucks many years ago, they sounded awesome and were the most comfortable set I've ever had. Now I have the SE-A1000's which are really big but also pretty comfy and sound quite nice for the price.

Most cans start to squeeze my head after like an hour, but both these pairs I can wear indefinitely.

I've heard NOTHING but good things about the Audio Technica ATH-M50. After that, I would look at Sennheiser.

I use Sennheiser 380 pros with a soundblaster z and have been very happy. The 380 pros can be found at best buy so you can get them local if you're interested.

Beeyerdynamic DT770 for $150 (one of the best headphones I ever used)

http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-770-PRO-250-ohms/dp/B0006NL5SM

+ Logtiech Desktop USB mouse for $30

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Labtec-Desktop-Microphone-600/dp/B000O7K4LO/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1393823499&sr=1-1&keywords=usb+desktop+microphone

That's what I use with an Asus Xonar Essence STX sound card to drive them.

200 what, bananas? What country do you live in? Are these headphones just for gaming, or for music or films too? Open back or closed back? What music do you listen to? Just like when buying a PC (or car) you need to be a lot more specific before you can make a choice.

My take on recommendations posted above:

  • $150 HD pros? I have no idea what model you're on about, possible the 280 pro or 380 pro. 280 pro are horribly uncomfortable and sound pretty bad. 380 pro are more comfortable and isolate well, but I wouldn't recommend them for gaming or even home music listening - it's not what they're designed for.
  • Can't comment on those Pioneers, never heard them and haven't read much.
  • Would not recommend anything from the Sennheiser 400 series, none of them are bad per say, just very average and overpriced. Also closed back so poor for gaming.
  • M50 are ok but way overhyped and overpriced these days.
  • HD558 - good option for the money, better value than the 598s which are only slightly better but often noticeably more expensive.
  • PC360 are way overpriced due to the mic, for the money you can get better headphones and a separate (and probably better) mic. Still, if you HAVE to get a headset they're not bad
  • 380 pro - see bullet 1
  • DT770 - better option than M50, but normally more expensive. V shaped response if that's what you're after, but not good for gaming.

Answer the questions at the start of the post and I'll try to find the best option for you.

@kraken2109: Hey Kraken thanks for the post, I am in Canada, but usually order from the US and get it shipped to a PO Box just across the border (20min drive). They would mostly be for gaming, mainly Counterstrike GO lately, but occasionally they will be used for music or a movie. Music I listen to is mostly Classic Rock, eg. Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Tom Petty, CCR. So nothing to bass heavy.

(Prices from Amazon.com, they may be cheaper elsewhere)

$130 Sennheiser HD558

$180 AGK K612 pro

$185 Sennheiser HD598

$200 Beyerdynamic DT880 pro

EDIT: The AKGs and Beyers will like something better than onboard sound to sound their best due to high impedance

I love my gamescom 780s, plus they have a good mic for gaming.
