I'm looking at getting a new big screen for my place around boxing day (which should help on the cost end of things). I've sworn by Samsung for as long as I can remember, but I'm open to options that may have an advantage. I've always avoided Plasma as the thought of a slight burn in is worse that the sound of nails on a chalkboard combined with 20 screaming babies and 10 whining prepubescents on XBL. (Yes that bad) I know the technology has improved so I'm a bit more open to the opportunity of buying into plasma. Bells and whistles like these SMART apps don't really come into my purchasing criteria so much. I just want a nice sharp picture so I can actually distinguish nubs blending in with shrubs/grass or hiding in shadowy areas. I think most any gamer could associate with this description well enough. Thanks in advance.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better TV at ~$1300 for the 55" Panasonic VIERA TC-P55ST30. The GT and VT add a few more features and slightly better image quality, but this TV is loads better than any LCD of a similar size at twice the price.

Our 60" ST30 comes tomorrow, but just from reading AV forums and professional reviews rastan is correct. You won't find a better value than the ST30. You could get a slightly better picture by getting a Samsung D7000/8000, but you won't get the large screen. ST30 has performance and price nailed down. The 60" goes for about $1320 on Amazon I believe.

I own the ST30. It has buzzing issues, and while it varies case by case, it is widespread and almost always there. I'd seriously consider checking out the Samsungs, or at least speaking with a sales rep and/or panasonic about the problem. The picture is great, though.

For that price I THINK you can get a Samsung PND7000, which has a better picture than the ST30.

That would be a very good set, but it's 51" and I think for the same price, the extra 4" in the 55" Panny offset the small video performance difference. The buzzing would be something to keep in mind, but I've never experienced it where it was very noticeable outside of some Samsung sets a couple of years a go. I guess it's hit or miss.

If you want it for gaming the input lag on the ST30 is rated at 16 ms which is extremly good. Thats important if you play a lot of online FPS game or racing games. But yeah from what I have read the Samsung PND7000 does have better picture quality.
