Have you ever played Diablo 2? It's only 10$ and only 10$ for the great expansion. Starcraft Battlechest is only 10$ as well which includes the original, expansion and strategy guide. gamestop.com or ebgames.com and find your local stores or order online.

This is what I consider the greatest game ever, but it may not fit your tastes. The avatar of the poster above also makes me want to wholeheartily recommend Deus Ex. *watches everyone reading this thread reinstall said game* Oh, and System Shock 2. Along with DX, that's a must play.

FPS would have to be half life 2 or FEAR. If you really want to try out a hard FPS you can do Far Cry.

Grand Theft Auto on the PC is fun if you get a controller.

I just got Tomb Raider, going to see if that is any good.

And Command and Conquer is really fun too.

I just bought rainbow 6 vegas and have been having lots of fun with the online coop modes.. for example, you can run through the whole game in story mode online with friends. Haven't even touched the single player, so there is lots of game for the money. Very few online games have any coop whatsoever, so this is quite refreshing.

U do need a strong setup, hopefully a dual core processor of some sort, and a solid GPU since it runs on the new unreal 3 engine. The game looks friggen great... the Casinos and hotels are extremely detailed. The guns feel real.

Say what you will about the death of the classic R6 games, but Vegas is an extremely entertaining, fun, and well-made game. And ya, co-op is amazingly fun.

Personally I couldn't get into vegas. Tried the demo out for xbox 360 but it's just not my kind of game ya know. It just plays so weird compared to say Gears of War. Just my tastes I guess. I have played Rainbw Six for PC, it's good but I didn't complete it. I just feel more at home with games I can just jump in and play. I could do that with Vegas but it's more tactical and requires more time and more thinking.

That's funny though because I know Warcraft 3 you can jump in and play but it's hard to master. Hmm. Anyway it's just not my type of games I guess.

Thats very true. Most good games, imo, have a quick "fundamentals" learning curve but take a while to truly get good at. Just look at Counterstrike: any idiots can click their mouse and press WASD, but to truly get good at it takes a bit of practice.

You try way too hard.

I recommend you go to the PC section of Gamespot and sort every game by rating. Look through the top 50. Profit.

I'm trying to avoid mentioning every mainstream FPS and the like that everyone else here always mentions(Battlefield, Unreal Tournament, Half-Life, Counter-Strike, etc.). (Admitted, DX and SS2 get mentioned quite a bit in here.) I don't have anything against mainstream games or anything(I'd be playing the hell out of BF2 and Oblivion right now if my PC didn't suck), but I do try to give the underdogs a little more recognition. Anyway, you want more suggestions? -Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2 if you want a different FPS. I can't quite put them into words accurately-you'll have to go try them for yourself. -Operation Flashpoint and Armed Assault if you want realistic military FPSs with vast maps and vehicles. (Note the word "realistic", where games like the Battlefield series do not really apply.) -IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 if you're looking for a serious WWII combat flight sim. -Falcon 4.0(original or Allied Force)or Lock-On if you want a modern jet sim instead. -Freespace if you want a mission-based space "sim" and don't mind the airplane-in-space flight model. -X series of space "sims" if you want something very open-ended and don't mind the airplane-in-space flight model. -Independence War 2 if you want something open-ended and would prefer to tackle a realistic Newtonian flight model instead. -MechWarrior 2 or 3 if you're looking for a different type of simulation. Stay away from MW4-it's dumbed-down. I've got more, but that's a good enough list for now.

Max Payne 1 and 2 are both truly amazing games, and not too expensive either. Only downside is their relatively short length.

A recent game? Yeah, I'd have to agree with everyone else Rainbow Six Vegas.

Be sure to hook up with a friend for some coop play, don't miss it, it's alot of fun :D

I'm having an absolute blast with Tomb Raider Anniversary right now. Crystal Dynamics took the first TR games and added new play mechanics (you might recognize a few from the Prince of Persia games) to make a some old, some new remake.

Try finding the demo for any game you intent to buy. Rainbow Six Vegas isn't for everyone. Also make sure you got good system requirements for it.

Oblivion

Half Life 1 AND 2

Vegas

Blizzard Games (Warcraft, Starcraft, Diablo -- all amazing and unique gaming experiences)

The thing is, there are so many PC games out there it's hard to label one as "The Best Computer Game" out. Take a look around the Gamespot reviews and do some research into a game you think you'd like.

The multiplayer interface is a bit funky. To get to most of the coop matches, choose the "custom match" button in the multiplayer interface, even if you are joining a public game, rather than hosting. Every time i have checked there have been many coop games ready to be joined.

In coop mode, the game plays just like a tactical FPS, not complex at all to control, since you are not controlling a squad. You can jump right in, though you will die a lot at first in "realistic mode" the most difficult mode that is frequently played on the coop servers... but at least you will figure all the controls out very fast.
