Good folks over at /r/battlefield_4 have run up a list of all the sweet features of BF4.  Basically, this is what BF3 wanted to be.  It's a true BF2 sequel

  • MOBILE COMMANDER VERSION Controlled only via tablet device, no mobile phones.

  • Confirmed to work with Apple Ipad/Ipad Mini, Google Nexus and Samsung Galaxy Tab. (I would also asume it to Work with Asus Nexus)

Known changes to animations/mechanics

as suggested by u/HARRO_PR3ASE

  • Sprint swimming

  • Short dives while swimming

  • Ability to fire a side arm while swimming on surface

  • Recon class has ability to "peak" up over an object and fire while taking cover, possible that other classes may have this too.

  • Spotting now has a hand gesture and will spot multiple targets at once, eliminating the need to spam the spot key (and in my case annoy my wife with the constant "i have spotted an enemy machine gunner in you AO" playing over and over again)

  • base jumping / parachute mechanic has changed, you can see player pulling the rip cord after changing to a head first positon

  • Knifing animation has changed, and also features a counter knife feature. Currently counter knife only works from frontal attacks. Alpha game play has only shown one type of take down animation, but likely there are multiples as before.

Tossing a grenade animation has changed, looks more like throwing a baseball now. (looks better to me*)

Known fixes from BF3

  • Recon class has the ability to Zero a weapon (info here:[1] http://www.reddit.com/r/battlefield_4/comments/1g6kwz/im_really_surprised_that_our_battlefield/) submitted by u/terrorstormed

  • When capturing a base, the radius for being in the capture zone has increased and the icon of the base no longer enlarges and blocks the players view.

  • Updates to net coding to smooth out game play and reduce "rubber banding" (source: LevelCap's Youtube Video from E3)

  • Being killed by a jet, Viper, or road vehicle will now displayed as killed by "vehicle name" instead of just "killed"

In game team balance is a huge win for me. Hopefully it makes for far more consistently competitive matches. Rest of it sounds excellent to me, lot of great additions or modifications. I've already preordered :)

Damn straight.  BF3 matches, majority of the time was one-sided.  Quite annoying.  In-game team balance is a must.

It was at the end of one of the trailers. Press F to counter the knife and kill the dude attacking. But I think it's only against front knife attacks, from behind you will still die.

It's to stop them spamming the knife and running at you

I think counter knife is also a lot better for presentation than some rsoldier holding his knife and slashing at your chest a few times. Players who do that will now be worried about counter knife kills.

Haha, yeah I knife spam on frontal attacks sometimes, but most of the time it doesn't work. Better just to use your secondary.

It's going to be difficult knife stabbing someone in the front, especially when they can easily counter it. I guess this makes more sense.

People will likely still get knifed a lot cos it happens so fast you might not react in time, but I hope it makes people think about it more and maybe not risk it

Flashbangs landing on mcoms wouldn't stop people from arming or disarming the MCOMS. Incendiary might be another matter, probably are area denial or might be useful against light armored vehicles?

Also Rush :P who plays that mode? Rush desperately needs a more natural, large objectives to destroy - not a tiny box that is just ripe for spam. Warfigther had a larger target with multiple places to plant bombs, much better.

I wasn't excited at all for BF4, but all these things are excellent news. Just looking at the features in BF4, I don't even want to touch BF3. It just makes me resent myself more for putting 200+ hours into BF3, which I consider to be full of flaws when you really analyze. It explains why I couldn't enjoy it on the level that I did with Bad Company 2 and previous BF games. BF3 just has so many annoying flaws that ruin teamplay. I play BF for teamplay, not to solo around, which I've pretty much had to resort to within the last months playing it. Uninstalled. I'm ready for BF4. On to other single-player games that are worth my friggin time. /rant

Yep, I keep saying over and over since BC2 that rush should have you setting charges on support struts of buildings in like an underground parking lot. When they go the whole building comes down. Now with what they showed of BF4 it seems like it could be happening

I wasn't really interested in BF4, but the multiplayer video did look pretty awesome. Doubt I'll be buying at release like I did with BF3, not after the Premium nonsense.

BF4 has premium up front this time but yeah, the prices on BF3 dropped dramatically very soon after that

Still ****ing hilarious that Battlefield 4 is playing catchup Battlefield 2. Absolutely bewildering. Anyway the details seem like good iterative improvements, shame aesthetically it looks almost identical to BF3. And it better not keep the worst unlocks system to grace a triple A video game, ever. Gosh that unlock system was the worst thing.

Honestly I think this is a really good call. The 'get the first DLC free' launch bait is completely negated by premium offering the first DLC, and seanmcloughlin is absolutely correct - a price drop usually comes with Premium, followed by a Premium + BF3 combo. It's a horribly janky model. Might be the first man BF game I haven't bought on release too.

Basically every thing we wanted to see with BF3.

Sounds like they won't be building a in-game server browser though. Oh well.

There's a stream where someone can counter knife from behind...I might be wrong on this.

this sums up my thoughts nicely, I only put 60 hours into BF3 though before I realized it was just annoying me. It has some great mechanics but the lack of teamplay killed it for me.

Sounds like this will have similar mechanics but with Voip and a commander + team balance, I am so used to EA run devs moving in the wrong direction I am taken aback by all of this.

I hope the launch maps are a bit more focused in their design this time, Rising Storm has made me realize how big a difference good map design can make for promoting teamwork.

I honestly wish DICE would just steal RO's attack/defend territory game mode and implement it into BF, its like a cross between Rush and Conquest that would kick ass with BF's style of gameplay.

Well unlike Call of Duty, you can only hold one kind of grenade at a time, and unless you have the squad Frag specialization, you can only hold one of them at that. So with multiple grenade types (smoke, frag, incendiary), I don't think we have to worry about flashbang spam, especially if the effects are less pronounced than in CoD (and I imagine they will be to balance potential grenade spam).

Pre.S.: Ive read my post  and its a bit redundant so bear with me , lol

This remake of BF3 named BF4, reminds me of the UT2003 fiasco, even though it was a good game, Epic always meant it to be UT2004.

Im guessing that the lack of funds and/or publishers, ceo, whoever... in need of cashflow pressed so they released ut2k3, in order to make 2k4 possible.

Now the story repeats itself with BF, as most people are noticing a lot of things are left untouched from bf3 into bf4, meaning, they are just adding the missing features that were planned from the start.

Another idea that comes to mind is: They wanted BF4 to be the king, and in order to make that happen, they needed to half bake bf3 so that bf4 could come and triumph over it.

Both ideas follow the same principle but for different reasons.

Im excited for BF4 and most likely buy it. And I really hope I can use my tablet to play commander from work.

LOVE the idea of Commander Mode (non playable character) and the ability to play on a Tablet. You could be sitting on the couch watching TV and playing Commander as a mini game.

Nice thread wiseboi, really wasn't expecting much from this to be honest, but it has been a nice surprise with what we have seen and been reading.

[QUOTE="skrat_01"]Still ****ing hilarious that Battlefield 4 is playing catchup Battlefield 2. Absolutely bewildering. Anyway the details seem like good iterative improvements, shame aesthetically it looks almost identical to BF3. And it better not keep the worst unlocks system to grace a triple A video game, ever. Gosh that unlock system was the worst thing.

Why was it bad?

Yeah it's a brilliant idea. People playing commander WILL be playing commander, not just calling themselves in arty and a ride when they need it.

Here are some shots of the customization

I'm really loving the various options, but I'm excited to see how the classes will work and what kind of character customization options we get.

Why was it bad?

Linear unlock progression, how slow it was, how you were put at an inherent disadvantage to players who spent far more hours grinding at unlocks, and how it applied individually to every weapon, class and vehicle.

****ing stupid decision, nothing was worse then taking to the skies in a jet, only to be painted with missile locks without anything to defend yourself other then your main cannon - and no way to practice learning the flying nuances or basics. S

ame with tanks, class abilities and so on. EA then offering a fee to unlock them was ****ing horrible too - paying more to unlock existing content because of a poorly designed system. Just wow. If they're going to do this they should copy off COD BLOPS' XP pool non-linear unlocks.

Honestly I think the tablets working in isolation (if possible) is super, super dumb.

Good on consoles maybe (making up for slow analogues), but if the commander can't voice chat with squad leaders then it's going to be utterly neutered in terms of strategising; which if it works - in itself seems pretty dumb talking into a tablet (if it has VOIP) while infront of the TV. Either way it's one of the best thing about this game that it's back.

The commander on the tablet can talk to squad leaders. The devs confirmed this on reddit a few days ago. They built that whole Sonar thing that is on Battlelog straight into the engine allowing them to have multiplatform VoiP between mobile devices and the PC/consoles.

Also the game now has full in-game VoiP on the squad level even on the PC.

Sweet that's some great news, don't have anything negative to say about any of these details - that's actually pretty fantastic in terms of cross compatibility. Are squad leader and commander hierarchies from BF2/2142 still there in VOIP comms? Guess the netcode must've gotten a major overhaul since then too.

They didn't say, but I believe somebody said that squad leaders can talk to the commander and vise versa. That's about it.

As for netcode they said they have been working to really tighten it up.

It seems that they probably wanted to do all of this with BF3 but given their 2 year release schedule it's just eaiser for them to make all of these changes in the new game when they have a full team working on it rather than trying to have their smaller support team and DLC team work on these big changes.

What I love is how BF4 isn't stealing the show but it's just that game that looks absolutly fantastic.

I'm impressed by what I've been hearing about BF4 so far. BF3 was great, but it devolved from BF2 in so many ways - the lack of VoIP, lack of a commander mode... This looks like the more modern iteration of BF2 that I am personally looking for.

That, and I do agree that the linear unlock system requires an overhaul. People should get a couple of unlocks per rank increase and put it towards guns that they want. Scopes and such should be available the moment you unlock your gun - and vehicle unlocks should be eliminated entirely.

Also, commander mode on a tablet is badass. Can't wait to play it on my Surface Pro!

Yeah I can't wait to be sitting on my iPad while casually commanding players. It's going to be like an RTS where you're units are real people.

The only thing I am not sure I like is the spotting multiple enemies feature.  does this mean you just gesture in a direction and anyone onscreen is spotted?

Other than that, this sounds amazing.

Interesting, either way good to hear. Aaah that does make sense and I get the feeling BF3 took some major hits during development, going by the first announcements, and I cant say I'm fond of EA's pushing and DICE conceding - still that's entirely their prerogative. Sounds good though. Honestly I'm just happy to see the stuff that was cut and glaringly missing from 3 back. I'm not sure if I'll buy it on the release, but it's such a huge step in the right direction even if it's iterative.

natural selection 2 has a system like this (minus the ipad) and it works pretty well, although that is on a much smaller scale. hopefully it still works with 64 players.

My interest level in this game has been gradually rising as this news is trickling in, its making me want ot reinstall BF3 but I know that will be a mistake.

/rantElann2008
Me too, I can't wait for it now :o As for BF3, I still play it, I still enjoy it. :D

^ Nice one man. THanks for sharing that. I wonder if Fox news will write about the falling skyscrapper and bring up 9/11, and how we gamers are degenerates.
