Guys I am wondering what games you would all recommend to someone who has never really played a city/population building type game. I tried the Tropico 4 demo and it really has my interest peaked. However, I feel very overwhelmed as a "noob" to the genre. Are there any games of this genre that you would consider easier than others?

Settler 7 is awesome, not really a city management, but the main reason I think it's better is it has an objective which you can achieve in many ways. Most of these games don't have goals other than building a big city... after a few hours, it gets really boring.

Caesar III is dated, but was quite good and entertaining in that aspect, it was also easy to pick up on and do well in after spending a little time with it. Never tried C IV.

Dawn of Discovery. But for some reason, Steam has it listed but you can't buy it...

I used to play Caesar 2 (just installed DOS box to play it a few months ago), and it is awesome.

Rollercoaster Tycoon series is another great one. Though not city building, its more or less the same kind of thing.. In which you build up something and manage it.. RCT series is often times far more creative then other city building games.

You buy it with the expansion called Dawn of Discovery Venice. Dawn of Discovery Venice allows you to play online.

Another good city sim is Stronghold or Rise of the Middle Kingdom. Both are old but quite interesting.

Get this one, it is very fun and a good entrance into the genre and has a lot of content.

Try tropico 3 with the expansion. Its very easy to pick up and play game for a beginner imo. Its probably pretty cheap now too.

I don't have many myself but Settlers 7, as others have mentioned, is pretty great and the single player definitely eases you into it.
