2560x1440 monitors, worth the cost?

I'm in the midst of considering an upgrade but am having a hard time rationalizing the cost. The higher the rez the better but not many games natively support that resolution and some don't support the image ratio at all (wankers). To those who do game on a 2560x1440 monitor, is it worth it? And if it is, how would you recommend I go about upgrading (which monitor, PSU and/or GPU update, cost effectiveness)?

If I were to upgrade, I would likely eye a Yamasaki Catleap from Ebay since I have heard good things and the price is tolerable (I can't justify purchasing a $1000 monitor, but sub $700 is possible). Good idea/Bad idea? Better options available?

Current PC Setup: i7-2700k, EVGA GTX 670 FTW, TX650 Corsair PSU, Asrock Z77 Extreme4 Mobo, 16GB Vengeance RAM, AOC i2757FH monitor (intention would be to dual screen if possible with 2560x1440 monitor if possible).

All comments appreciated.

Microcenter and Monoprice has their own variant of the catleap-like monitors, same panels for $400 a pop.

I'd say if you've got the extra power, go for it. Especially if you're getting one for a decent price. They look awesome. And, as Mitu said, 2560x1440 resolution is actually supported by damn near all games nowadays, and the aspect ratio is just 16:9 (same as 1080p), so if you run into a game that doesn't support it, 1920x1080 will stretch to fit, without throwing anything off, or giving you letterbox bars, or anything like that.

Sorry, for clarification, I meant 2560x1600 @ 16:10 ratio. From reading up on the higher rezzes, a good amount of games will upscale with a small minority of games locked in 16:9 ratio, which is what I was regarding. I don't mean to pretend that I know much about games for the higher rezzes above 1080p.

So working off the presumption that I have $600 disposable income, which monitors would you recommend for consideration? Anything comparable to a Yamasaki Catleap in terms of value for quality? And as I'm in Western NA, which purchasing outlet is my best option IYO?

Two other questions: on Ebay I see several different price points and some ranging features such as tempered glass, s-ips, etc. What would be the ideal model from Yamasaki, meaning highest build quality, highest image fidelity, etc.?

And regarding power consumption, is my TX650 sufficient for dual monitor setup with my AOC i2757FH and your recommendation? I don't intend to multi-monitor game, only on the 2560x1440 (but I would use the other monitor to run a web-browser for MMO wikis and the sort while playing).

As for Yamasaki I'm not sure which is the best one.

Another way of looking at is this. Can you tell the difference between 1080 and 720, if yes then imagine the same difference again but with 1080 being the "720". I have always said, resolution adds more than what most people percive. Alot more. Its simply the amount of information your PC can show you. The more information, the better. 1080 is becoming much the 1024x768 res. Everyone said "oh know its fine you dont need anything more!!".

That being said, I have always found that playing games at sub your screens native resolution always looks weird. So be prepared for your system to possibly struggle with framerates unless you are prepared to play in either a windowed mode (I think looks better) vs non-native res.

The level of detail difference between 1920x1080/1200 and 2560x1440/1600 is noticable, but it's also significant enough to create a perf hit. SLI/Xfire configs help a noticable amount.

The LED backlit version of the 27" Dell Ultrasharp is around your price range and a very high quality monitor. There are cheaper monitors that'll work fine, too, but the Dell Ultrasharps are top-of-the-line.

Looking at my U3011... yes, 1440 or 1600p is worth it.

If you have a high end machine i guess it could be worth it. However you will be limited to only pc games at that res. You can't get movies or console games at that res. Also go for a good one not just a cheap one. You want good contrast and colour to make up a good picture not just resolution.

Maybe when I have 2x GTX 770, I'll consider that monitor upgrade I've always been wanting, mainly out of curiosity for first-hand experience. At the moment, I've been perfectly happy with my 27" 1200p monitor until recently I kinda want a 120hz monitor. So it's either a hi-res ips monitor or 120hz. Until that day comes, I'll have to decide then.Elann2008

I got my Catleap from ebay, and I'm so happy with it.

I recommend investing a bit extra for a Pixel Perfect version, otherwise you can take a chance and hope you don't have any dead pixels.

I payed about $450, plus I had to pay taxes when it was dilivered about $69, So overall I saved about $200 if I got it from Dell.

My exact words were "a bit low" for that size, not that it was crap. I also said that it's more of an issue for non-gaming applications.

It's worth it but it can put some stress on your hardware. I have noticed performance hits when playing Metro 2033 and Batman Arkham City with my GTX 690. But Guild Wars 2 is stunning on my machine @1440. Jaw dropping is putting it lightly. GoldenElementXL

It is absolutely worth it.  I cant imagine ever gaming or just using a computer at anything less than 2560x1440p resolution.

The price of admission is high, but i highly recommend it if you can afford it.
