Yes, it's this question again, but wait, it has conditions! :D

So right now I have a Geforce 980. Great card! But it's getting a little old.

Thinking of upgrading. Loyal Nvidia customer, but have dabbled with ATI/AMD in the past.

My question is this: if I plan on sticking with 1080p (1920x1080 to be exact) for some time, should I get a GTX 1080, or just go for an RTX 2080?

Also, why are the GTX 1080 cards so expensive still? I can get an RTX 2080 for <900 dollars, but I can't seem to find a GTX 1080 for <800 (average). I've only looked on retailers like Newegg fyi.

Cheers, thank you for your help.

I had to make a similar decision a month ago and went with RTX. The ludicrous GTX prices, base performance increase and RTX potential (dlss, dxr) made it worth the $100 gap for me.

Unfortunately, every rtx feature so far basically has an asterisk next to it. Rtx on bfv looks nice but doesn't implement full range of features. Dlss on final fantasy has great performance gains but only works for 4k res. Shadow of the tomb raider was supposed to have rtx but the devs are completely silent on that. Metro we will see.

If I were you, I'd either find a better deal elsewhere on 1080 if possible or if you can only find those prices then run with 2080. You can also just wait for AMD to unveil their new line and see what happens if you're not in a hurry.

Might be worth waiting until early next year... See what happens with the GTX 11XX stuff.

both of those cards are generally overkill for 1080p...

maybe split the difference and go for the 2070?

980 is still fine for 1080p.

If your using newegg why aren't you looking at the RTX 2070 ? Priced $499 and offers about 10% more performance than the gtx 1080. Also as others have stated the 980 is good for 1080p, should run at least high settings on all games.

Where 5 years into this generation and as a result game engines/requirements have been pretty stagnant the last 2-3 years. I would only upgrade if your eyeing a resolution bump in 2019.

@mrbojangles25: As other said, 1080 or 2080 are overkill for 1080p gaming.

If you intend to go 2K get GTX1080, if you want 4K then it's the 2080.

As for now I'm still rocking with my GTX970, if you want to gain better performance get 1070 or 1070Ti, no need to go beyond that for future proofing a while.

What's your current CPU? maybe you're experiencing bottleneck within that area

@PredatorRules: CPU is an i7 4790...a bit old, but still a solid workhorse.

I notice I get slowdown in AC Odyssey in heavily populated areas, but only when all the people are "loading" into the game (i.e. when my eagle flies over a fort, for example, and spots all the people). My CPU usage goes up to 99% (100, maybe?)*.

GPU runs at about 70% at those points. A "cool" 73 degrees C (not sure if that's hot or not, seems all right to me)*

Still averaging a pretty decent amount of frames on average, though; I think out in the country I get 60+, while in towns I rarely bog down to 45 (average), it's closer to 55.*

Not sure what I'm complaining about tbh, I guess I just want to upgrade haha. Monitor is pretty good, 23" 1920x1080 144 hz screen. Was considering an "ultrawide" for a bit but I have a VR unit for when I really want to get immersed.

It's funny, there seems to be a serious slowdown as far as tech goes both game engines (i.e. nothing is really pushing the limits) and hardware (gains of 20xx over 10xx not as great as 10xx over 9xx). Toughest game for me to run right now is Star Citizen, and I'm chalking that up to being a buggy un-optimized alpha

*according to the Ubisoft in-game performance tool

@mrbojangles25: You shouldn't worry too much about Ubi / EA games, they have shit optimization sometimes. AC Odyssey runs like crap as you've mentioned 100% CPU usage is because Denuvo protection is activating itself a couple of times every few moments just to ensure you're not pirating the game (although the game already got pirated and they should remove the protection already)

@PredatorRules: and Denuvo is supposed to be one of the "better" DRM tools, right?

*sigh*

RTX 2070 would fit you better. However I would opt for RTX 2080 if you are dead set on one of those cards.
