Hey guys, i'm starting to feel like my cpu is holding back my GPU a little.

This is what i'm currently running:

CPU : i5 6600K

GPU : gtx1080

Mobo : Asus Z170 pro

If I were to upgrade the cpu, what should I pick to make it worth the investment and see a difference ?

Thx in advance for your advices.

Its not holding it back,

You could;

1. OC it

2. Get a 9900k or a 2990wx

6600K is still good. Most games do not stress the CPU that much unless you are running a high refresh rate monitor. Try OC it if you are certain you are running into bottlenecks. This will help the most with games that rely heavily on a single core.

I am, I got a 144hz monitor.

I've been playing hunt recently and I have terrible framerates, sometimes even below 50 and I'm playing on 1080p with everything on low. I know the game is in early access and it is not very optimized yet but still...

If I were to OC, what's the max I could go ? I've never done it before. I'll have to watch some youtube tutorials.

Try for 4.5MHz.

@jack00:

is your cpu at 100% across all cores when your frame rates are in the 50's or are you getting low gpu usage during the dips? You might want to try DSR at 1440p, to lower cpu usage and increase gpu uasge if it is.

@04dcarraher: It's for starters, never said don't go for more. 0.27 will gain you nothing anyway.

You only need 4.5Mhz if you want to play DOS games. I’d recommend installing a turbo button too.

I got the same CPU and I am looking at the 2920X from AMD...

Wait for 9700K or 9900K if want to see what Intel is coming with.

@jack00 I tried Hunt: Showdown this weekend too. I don't like the game as I find it boring and poorly designed (No incentive to explore and engage the regular enemies. Just chase clues and head to the boss). However, I was getting slightly over 60fps at max settings 3440x14440 with my GTX 1080 Ti. So, you should definitely be getting 60fps at least with your GTX 1080 at 1920x1080.

I recommend running an overlay program like Afterburner/RivaTuner. That way you can see exactly what is going on when you are getting low fps. See what your GPU usage is at and then compare it to the CPU usage at the same time. Is the overall CPU usage maxed? Is there a single core maxed? That will at least show you where your bottleneck is.

For your OC... 4.5 Ghz should be stable for you if you have proper cooling. You can push it further as well, but it all depends on your cooling setup and if you were lucky to get a good chip with the silicon lottery.

Thx for the advice. I can get 80fps in some areas like I can get 45 in some parts. I was playing at 1440p at first with everything on high, then lowered everything, I saw a small amelioration...

Shame you didn't like Hunt, i'm having a blast with it. Give it another try and when you find a good partner, add him and play with him again. You'll see there's more to it. It's not about killing the boss, it's about escaping with the bounty while not getting hunted down by another team. The fire fights with other players are super exciting and rewarding when you come out on top. It is really unforgiving as one bullet in the head with any gun will result in insta death, and it doesn't require more than a few bullets to kill some one so softcore gamers might be turned off by that a little. You have to be quiet or you'll get spotted in a second. The "regular" enemies as you call them are not there to kill, they are there to avoid...

@jack00: I won my very first match and escaped with both bounties. I killed 4 human players too. One of them was carrying the Butcher's bounty and my partner and I killed the Spider. The game is very shallow. It reminds me of a mix of Evolve and the Dark Zone from The Division. I also found it very gimmicky and hard to get immersed in the setting. So many groups of crows, broken glass on the ground, cans hanging on strings, etc..

Oh you're just a noob lol.

This isn't 1980, 4.77 Megahertz (Mhz) is ancient, CPU's/GPU's/Memory are all at Gigahertz (Ghz) speeds in 2018, CPU's especially, have been for some time, likely before you were born.

Everyone but you knows, until I told you, you replied twice "without realising" but keep lying.

PS: Didn't know you could OC a i5 8400...

I started with a 3570K, my case wouldn't allow overclocking and the recent build is what it is.

Perhaps a i7 7700k if you can sell your cpu. This will be the cheapest upgrade.
