Hey, over the years I've collected a nice pile of still working parts and since my not so rich friend moans about not having money to buy a generation old console, I figured I'll build a gaming PC that'll (hopefully) go head to head with the 360 or maybe better.

I got:

- Intel Pentium D 945 3.4 ghz or AMD Athlon 64 6000+ 3.0 ghz

- 2x2 GB DDR2 sticks

- 320 GB HDD

- HD 5770 1 GB

Will the computer built with any of these CPUs be capable at running 360/ps3 gen games @ 720p or higher? I know my old 5770 will do the trick but I never used these CPU's for gaming.

Any small form factor PSU and case I can get to make this build livingroom friendly?

Good ol' Athlon X2 6000, I used that cpu from 2007 to 2010. It handled most multiplat games pretty well. Its faster than that Pentium D. Also that 5770 is a good gpu for those older games its as fast as a normal GTX 260.

I would keep the game selection older than 2012 date, and or the game is only Direct X9/10 based or not demanding titles in DX 11 . Keep an eye on system requirements to be safe. For the most part that type of Pc should be able to provide 720p+ better results than the 360/PS3.

To get head to head with 360 you'll need some old tech or new tech but going really low on budget.

Intel G series, 8Gb of RAM, RX460.

You could also get 2nd handed parts like some i3, i5, i7 or even Xeon CPU (saw once a model that been sold for 15$ and is still good for today's gaming)

Strong but old GPU will be something in the higher numbers such as GTX680, 690, HD7990 or HD7850

I would recommend upgrade the CPU to a Core 2 Duo Quad. I have Q6600 + HD 4850 for my HTPC and I could play most games at 1080P that came out till 2010 in DX 9/10 and even some games post 2010. HD 5770 is a great card, I would upgrade the CPU to at least Quad Core (like a Q6600 SLACR which can sometimes overclock to 3.6 Ghz if you are lucky) you can get it pretty cheap on ebay.

For a powersupply you can get something like a Thermaltake 430W TR2.
