As seen...I've a 4790k @4.6ghz. Ryzen seems really nifty, but the lower clocks speed mean it'd be a slight downgrade for most games.

At what point do you guys think something will be worth the upgrade form this 4790k? I'm itching for an upgrade, but it doesn't seem time yet for a real improvement for a reasonable price (no $1k chips and such).

I do run a plex server for my kids from time to time, so more cores would be nice for when I wanna game while they watch a show.

Thoughts?

Well with games that use 8 or more threads nominally Ryzen 7's perform better than haswell based i7's especially on minimum frame rates .

As long as you use 3000+ mhz DDR4 Ryzen 7's are great multitasker's shouldn't really see the downgrade but some games you will see gains.

Im in the same boat itching to upgrade my i5 4690k. For me going from an i5 to a ryzen 7 would be a bigger upgrade than you from i7 4790k.

Since it seems you could use the extra cores and threads, grabbing a Ryzen 1700 or 1700x wouldnt be a bad choice.

But I would wait just abit longer since intel is suppose to release their new coffee lake 6 core i5's 6 core 12 thread i7's

That should stir things up on prices.

I only upgrade when I have a bottleneck. If you are not bottlenecking your GPU, then keep that 4790K going strong. Personally, I upgraded from my old 3770K because it was bottlenecking me at higher frame rates on my 144hz monitor in certain games. I still use it in my secondary rig which is connected to a 72hz (OC from 60hz) monitor. It does well there.

When it dies, or wait for Cannon Lake if 20-30% boost for buying brand new CPU, MOBO and RAM is worth it.

Wait for Zen 2. Current Ryzen is on a 14nm process designed for low power usage (phones), which is why it doesn't clock very high and uses a ton of power near its clock limits. Zen 2 will use the new 7nm process from GloFo, IBM, and Samsung, reportedly capable of 5GHz. Or don't wait, current AM4 motherboards should be compatible with it so you could just upgrade later.

I'm still rocking a OC'd 4690k w/ a gtx1080. Holding out for Cannon lake w/e if I'm doing a full CPU / mobo / mem upgrade.

My boy got a 1600 for his new rig. He needs a new gpu, but he replaced an old q6600. I know it won't run most games like Intel i7's at 4.5+, but yeah, it's abeast of a cpu still. He wants to overclock at some point, but he runs everything fine for now so I'll wait till he upgrades gpu before helping with that. His comp installed win 10 off a usb stick in like...6/7 minutes. Nuts (onto ssd, of course).

Anyways...I agree, ryzen may be a little worse for games but it's not that bad. Those extra cores sure would be nice. I run a plex server on my pc as well.

A 4790k @4.6ghz is still plenty fast for gaming and I'd wait at least another gen, probably two before swapping that one out. I do understand the temptation of adding a few more cores to help with your Plex server, but you'll get a better $$ to performance jump if you wait just a bit longer.

Long ass time to be honest.

Your CPU is like 5 to 6 times faster than the consoles CPU.

Not only that but that last 3 to 4 years have been a joke in terms of developers trying to push the bar (what I mean by that is there's hardly any games out or coming out that are trying to really make use of good technology/specs). Mid tier hardware from 3 years ago is still running games at near max settings (thats how bad of a drought its been)
