Damn, just five? My "riffs" playlist on my iPod has 118 songs on it.

Oh well, I'll pick five of my favorites from that list, in no particular order.

Better By You Better Than Me by Judas Priest

Jessica by The Allman Brothers Band

How Many More Times by Led Zeppelin

Sabbra Cadabra by Black Sabbath

The Trooper by Iron Maiden

Great list. Mine are personally:

Demilich - The Echo (Replacement) = The riff that comes immediately after the intro riff.

Spawn of Possession - A Presence Inexplicable = The intro. Unfortunately very short, it's awesome.

Autopsy - In the Grip of Winter = First slow section.

Lord Gore - Last Supper (The Autophagous) = When vocals kick in.

Morbid Angel - Visions From the Dark Side = Verse riff.

Obituary - Infected = After intro riff, when solo starts

Pestilence - Chronic Infection = Verse riff.

Megadeth - Last Rites - Loved to Death = Verse riff.

Carcass - Incarnated Solvent Abuse = Chorus (?)

Aspid - It Came (Aspid) = Chorus riff.

Those are some that spring to mind. In no specific order though.

EDIT: I couldn't pick only five.

Choosing five of my favorites is nigh impossible, but I'll try to think of a few off the top of my head. BTW I learned Phobophile on bass a few days ago (still working on keeping it consistent). :D

I'm listening to Hour Of Penance's new album right now, so I'll go with the opening riff on Paradogma or the riff on the closing track Apotheosis.

Immolation's Father, You're Not A Father. That opening riff is colossal.

Belphegor's Blackest Ecstasy, Vomit Upon The Cross, etc. Plenty of great, sometimes simple riffing.

Gorguts' Inverted comes to mind first.

Anata's Sewerages Of The Mind.

Deathspell Omega's Jubilate Deo (O Be Joyful In The Lord). The choral riff. All the riffs on Carnal Malefactor, naturally. The Shrine Of Mad Laughter is godlike too.

Pretty much any Ulcerate riff off of Everything Is Fire, and the riff at the end of Martyr Of the Soil, Failure, and The Coming Of Genocide from their previous album.

Mitochondrion created what is in my opinion the greatest crescendo in all of extreme metal on Wraithlike...

i dunno, but these all have riffs so tastey that you can bite into them (and they happen to be linkable...): trey gunn-gate of dreamstribal tech-sheik of encinoelectric wizard-funeralopolisgordian knot-a shaman's whisperdemilich-long ass song title.

I'm too lazy to find them so I'll just say:

  • every riff in Crimson by Edge of Sanity
  • every riff in the album Back to Times of Splendor by Disillusion
  • the riffs on The Godless Endeavor and Dead Heart in a Dead World by Nevermore
  • Backbone - Gojira
  • a lot of Devin Townsend's stuff

That's all I remember right now.

Just-Radiohead

Formed from a competition to get the most chords into a song. Love it

Kool Thing-Sonic Youth

Once it gets stuck in your head, it stays there.

Half A Canyon-Pavement

Full of great riffs. (2:48 also gives me goosebumps)

No Age-Brain Burner

Makes me want to skank like a madman.

Can't for all time, but here's the ones right now.

Sacrifice Unto Sebek - Nile (Start's at 1:30)

Brains - Atheist (entire song is riiifffftastic!)

Burial Ground - Immolation (Intro riff)

Hallowed be thy Name - Iron Maiden (Main riff)

Blashyrkh (Might Ravendark) - Immortal (from about 3:00 - 4:15) That is one epic one minute and fifteen seconds.

God, picking five is hard.

I never really understood all the praise the band gets riff wise. I mean, there are some really great moments but the riffs don't stand out much most of the time. Still a pretty good album.

They're praised because they're really out of the ordinary. They're not as technically impressive as many, but they're weird.

But my favorites include Wherever I May Roam by Metallica and Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana.

If you like guitar riffs with balls, Sabbath is hard to beat. Iommi is God of the riff. Here is some more lesser known Sabbath if you're interested. I took one song from each of my favorite albums.

Electric Funeral

Lord of this World

Killing Yourself to Live

The riff in Knights Of Cydonia by Muse is probably my favorite. Can't list another four that really stand out though.
