Why do white people go to great lengths to get a "tan"/skin darker?

Now now calm down, im trying to make this sound less offense as I can. A classmate of mines brought this up in C.T today when discussing race and how whites would clown black people because of their skin color. Well the question was, why do white people go to great lengths to darken their skin building tanning booths when they know to much sun isnt good for thier skin,etc? Are white people uncomfotable with their skin color?

I wouldn't know... I'm irish, there is no hope for me! :(

Because sometimes a tanned white girl looks amazing. I don't think it has anything to do with them wanting to be black. Not that it would be bad if they were black but yeah it has nothing to do with that.

As for me, I never try to get a tan, cause if I do I just end up getting burned. I'm actually sunburned right now cause of the football game I went to this past weekend. There was no cloud cover, so half of my face is sunburned. I sort of look like two face. :P

When they're young. I'm 15 years out of high-school, and all the girls I know who kept tanned all through High School and even College now have faces and skin that looks taught, blotched and wrinkled. The girls I know who avoided tanning still look pretty good, much younger than their tanned counter-parts.

Actually, some of my favorite moments are when my friends are talking amongst themselves of how they got "tanner", and I just show them my skin and I'm like "Bam. I win". (I'm black).

the irony here is that getting a healthy amount of sun ensures that people get plenty of vitamin D, making them healthier and thus, potentially better at sports.

Vitamin D is readily available in vegitables. True the skin does produce Vitamin D in reaction to the sun, but this doesn't offset the damage the sun is doing at the same time.

also, not all white people are pale.

my italian friend pat is always "tan" and he doesn't go tanning or anything.

Both are pretty ugly no offense. Anyways to answer TC girls do it if they think it makes them sexier (sometimes it sometimes it doesn't. fake tans are an odd color). Guys thatgo out of their way to tan... well I don't know why.

also, in places like south america, where the majority of people are white people build up tans so that they don't get burned as badly by the sun.

technically hispanics are people from spain. spain is in europe. that's where white people come from.

it's been misused to talk about people of native south american and mixed origins though.
