I mean essentially it's like a ceremony on OT to make these "funeral," thread for "dead," (banned) users.

I think it's sort of pointless, but then again, if it is a user who was pertinent to the community, I'd understand.

Because people need reason to remember a person they hated (see latest topic) or people they liked. The problem comes from topics like the latest one but for the most part they are a legit topic about a person they are sad to see go.

Hmm, because the topic creator wants to draw attention to themselves... usually. Then there are the odd cases where people actually miss/hate the person and want to post about them one last time.

Personally I think that most (if not all) bannings are ridiculous. It's just tradition to make a thread for significant (or even barely-known) OT posters if they've been banned. I don't really see how it's problematic. If someone doesn't like those threads, they can ignore them.

Actually, I've noticed quite a few bans over the last couple of weeks, and have simply wondered why many people create them. To me, it's better just to contact the "dead," user outside of Gamespot, rather than "eMourning," them.

I did see your explanation. While that's likely true, I would suspect the "dead," user to get more attention than whoever created the topic.

Yes, I would agree. Snipes definitely had some impact on this community, just looking at the page count on his funeral thread. He was a good user with some severely different opinions than the general OT opinion, which is why most of his discussions caused great debate and enjoyment..

I think they are a good thing. In a weird sort of way you guys are a part of my life, even if it is just my internet life. It is nice to be able to reminisce about someone and say goodbyes and good riddances as necessary.

I would probably say so too at this point in my involement/activity here on Gamespot. But still, I just I am just angry at all these funeral threads. The only user I really knew was Snipes, even if he and I did have severely polarized opinions.

I don't think (most of) the people who actually make the topics are thinking about the 'dead' as much as the possible drama that could ensue and the sense of accomplishment from being the one who started it.

I remember a thread where the user banned was very new... new to the point where I can't even imagine him coming back to see their own thread because they probably were too new to really care. =/

I didn't see that one. Usually when they get closed quick it is because they are ban dodgers or they account suicided. This sounds different though. Do you have a link?

And we need to somehow tell the rest of Gamespot that another user has been banned. Especially if that user is quite well known.

Imo the TC of a banned thread - 9 times out of ten - is a person who genuinely liked the banned person.

For example, if I happened to open a thread for someone who was banned, my purpose would be that I was sad that they were banned.

Tbh, I think everyone who knows me knows that I don't seek popularity - otherwise I'd be in RC (which I don't) and every popularity thread.

I think nine times out of ten is a bit... ... .. high. Not to say that it doesn't happen, that's generally what the threads are for. But, i don't think it's the case at all with the 'newer' people being banned, and they seem to be the ones getting a lot of threads these days. More so than the older members.

What blows my mind is when someone opens up a thread for someone who suicided or ban-dodged. Those threads, are auto-lock...they aren't supposed to be posted.

topsemag55

This is a prime example where my logic applies. Why, I remember one time there was a thread up before a user even made it through the queue to be banned. I look at these threads and can't help but think the people making them want to draw attention to themselves more than anything.

I think it happens with some of the 'regulars' as well, depending on who notices the ban first. It isn't always a friend who happens to see the avatar be replaced with a Gamespot logo.

[QUOTE="Logan1616"][QUOTE="Baconbits2004"] Oh. Well, I've been having trouble falling asleep lately. Been a few instances recently of me just.. staying awake the whole night. It's something I need to work on.... :PBaconbits2004

Same here, I'm in the midwest. You?

Eastern. Making it about 4am here.. Probably won't go to bed for another 4 hours, you?

I've got class, and I still won't be tired then, and if I am, I'll just eat something/drink some water.
