They did have the most powerful army. Problem is they spread themselves too thin and tried to attack Russia, who they had a non-aggression pact with, during the brutal Russian winter.

They lacked the resuorces and capacity to keep up a prolonged fight with all the allied nations.

The US alone out produced all the axis nations by several fold.

Hitler had his brilliant German engineers built a Delorean and he went 85mph, and bam! You know the rest, that's why his body was never found, because he ain't dead.

I think the collapse of the Third Reich, and Hitler's failure to win the war can be attributed to Mussolini's invasion of Greece.

Insufficient population and economic base to fight a war of attrition against so many opponents simultaneously.

Only the outrageous incompetence and sloth of the Allies allowed them to succeed as well as they did in the early years.

i think they spread themselves out too far making it difficult to react to different situations as well as losing Russia after Stalingrad. Also the US was able to pump out tons of bombers which bombed a ton of oil refineries, ball bearing factories, etc.... there were some other factors as well.

Germany lost the war for several reasons. The two most important are their alliance with Japan and and attack on Russia.

If Japan had not attacked the U.S., The U.S. would not have gotten into the war because they were busy supporting the Nazis economically. So, because the U.S. got into the thick of it, the Nazis not only lost financing, they gained an enemy.

The attack on Russia during the winter was also a major mistake. Hitler had been warned, and ignored the warning. He also forgot that the Russians were just as nationalistic, so they weren't going to stop the fight at their borders if Germany got kicked out; if Stalin crippled Germany, there would be spoils.

Further, German equipment was as high-maintenance as it was high-tech. The most reliable weapon they had was a rifle that had been in service for nearly 150 years. That's another story for another day, but that was equally important; if your guns jam because of a speck of dust, you've got serious problems.

Other problems: Germany's military and political priorities were screwed. Eichmann was more concerned about gassing Jews than ensuring there were enough trains to cart supplies, which created a major logistics issue. The SS leadership under Himmler went insane, and the government was more concerned with carting Hitler around for public displays than actually running the country. In short, Germany's leadership was only good for running a country, not fighting a prolonged war - let alone one with multiple fronts. Add to that the fact that they alienated every culture they invaded, which led to guerilla warfare within almost every country they occupied but their own, the Nazis really dug their own graves. And they can owe it all to their own bigoted ideals of genetic superiority.

Why did Germany lose WWII? One word, Hitler While the answer seems simplistic, it was he who pulled the strings that led to the downfall of the Third Riech.

Hitler micromanaged the military, the Holocaust (Many prominent Jewish scientists could of helped the Nazi state if their race wasn't targeted), numerous opponents, tactical blunders, the list goes on.

Fighting a ton of countries on multiple fronts doesn't really equate to an adequate probability of success.

There were people that had the power, place and time to stop him, but they didn't. Regardless of whether or not they were caught up in the moment, his commanders all share the blame. All it would have taken was mutiny, but he put people as equally cruel around him, so there it is. Either way, he didn't have to be the one to fire the bullet, but he was.

They were fighting 2 wars on 2 fronts, basically stretching their army thin. The Russians were ruthless and the Americans/British were just as technologically equiped and well-trained, and Germany was boxed-in from the beginning. It also didn't help that their soldiers were mostly aroggant and their leader was an crazy, crazy tyrant. In other words, the cards were just not stacked in their favor. They may have had a well-trained army, but it doesn't matter when the just the Russians outnumbered them, last I counted, was 8-1 and the American/British forces were a very large force to be eckoned with as well.

They underestimated how hard it was to invade Russia, and Great Britain as a result they over extended themselves. They ended up running out of resources trying to fight the US and Russia which both had nearly limitless resources.

Basically because they fought three of the four most powerful countries in the world at the same time. If they kept the US out of the mix, they might not have lost, though they definitely weren't going to defeat Russia in an absoulute fashion.

Thought I would clarify - The Italian invasion of Greece failed horribly, so Hitler invaded Yugoslavia and then cleaned up the Greeks. This pushed back Operation Barbarossa - the invasion of Soviet Russia - by 6 weeks. Hitler made it to the gates of Moscow, but could not mount an offensive on the city because winter had set in. The panzer tanks could not even move. Had Italy not invaded Greece, and Barbarossa was carried out on schedule, the extra 6 weeks of operational panzers may have been enough time for the German blitzkrieg to take Moscow, and break the Soviets right there. Who knows though?

That might have been true if the Soviet Union had collapsed at that point, but I think they would have continued to fight. The Soviet government definitely had plans to do so, and I think they actually expected Moscow to be taken.

Actually, Nazi Germany had to attack the Soviet Union because they knew it was just a matter of time before the Soviets attacked them. Yugoslavs also liked to brag that they played a major part in defeating the nazis on the eastern front, because they delayed the attack on Russia for two weeks that turned out to be crucial.

The F*****s attacked Russia in Winter and didn't bring enough jackets. In other words the Germans never experienced a Russian winter. Thank god.
