For those who fervently oppose such ideologies, for what reasons are you afraid of a socialist or communist? Why are their ideas about society so scary?

This is true....because i believe that full government control gradually removes personal responsibility from life.

I hate communism because it brought nothing but oppression and misery to the country of my ancestors. My grandparents fled the country as teenagers and the man who helped them over the border was later executed. Westerners who call themselves communist know NOTHING of the pain it has brought to people who actually lived through it.

exactly. I believe that it wouldn't be good because, well, let's just say i want more money so i work more hours. But i can't keep all the money i earn because that wouldn't be equal. So i only get to keep how ever much i'm permitted to and then the rest goes to the government. so why work more if it's always going to go away? Everyone develops that motive and in doing so, productivity rates go down.
If memory serves me correctly, the USSR, and eastern block countries had laws preventing these types of things from happening. And you had to work as much as you were told. and if you didn't you'd break the law and the KGB would come to your house and i'm pretty sure you can guess the rest. So if you are a communist country and declining productivity rates are a problem, you could do this. However that is what we call Dictatorial my dear children and it is in fact highly frowned upon by its citizens.
Even at its base level, assuming that there was a communist county where the government was peaceful and not murdering people like Stalin, I still wouldn't want to live there for that reason, and to quote Thatcher, socialism is only nice until the government runs out of everyone's money.
To loosely quote former President Gerald Ford: Any govt big enough to give you everything you need is big enough to take from you everything you have.
I'll take personal responsibility and freedom, thank you.
So you hate capitalism also? People who have not lived in the west and call themselves capitalist know nothing of the pain it brings the majority of the working population who actually lived through it, and still do live through it.I hate communism because it brought nothing but oppression and misery to the country of my ancestors. My grandparents fled the country as teenagers and the man who helped them over the border was later executed. Westerners who call themselves communist know NOTHING of the pain it has brought to people who actually lived through it.

All I want for my country and fellow citizens is a system that will grant the most welfare for as many people as possible. If my reasoning lead me to believe that communism was the better choice, I would choose that. However, it is not. Capitalism is more efficient at providing goods and services to more people than Communism is. Is it a perfect system? Of course not, nothing that relies on humans ever is. But it's superior than the alternative.
I also believe that the most efficient system is not 'pure' capitalism in the most simple, academic use of the term. Dynamic, real world adjustment must be made to protect against market failures.I think it is important to continually observe and learn from real world case studies, and try to improve as we go along.
Finally, the system is not 'one size fits all'. Different economies at different maturity levels require different policies, and this should ALWAYS be taken into consideration, and 'our' way should not simply be superimposed upon others because it 'currently' works for us.

[QUOTE="Good-Apollo"] it's about communism and how much of a failure of an ideology it is. optiowCan you speak for every member of every country that has called themselves communist? Have you researched in depth every country which has had a communist revolution, as well as the current revolutions? Do you have family members and friends who not only lost their freedom but sometimes even their lives under the various regimes?
Have you been told first hand of the horror stories involving injustices against humanity that these people suffered?

Pretty much this. My dad told me the details of life under communism (Eastern Europe Balkans), $2/month pay, farm the food for the governemnt, lived in shacks...it was a depressing place...

If I lived with like 500 people, communism would be a great choice. But I live in a nation with more than 300 million peopleDo you have family members and friends who not only lost their freedom but sometimes even their lives under the various regimes?Yes. I had family members in East Germany. They told me all they saw, and I believe them. I had one Great Uncle who lived through not only the communist rule, but Hitler's Nazi regime also. And if you had even researched communism one bit, you would realize that era was not communism.Have you been told first hand of the horror stories involving injustices against humanity that these people suffered?Good-Apollo
What do you think of Democratic Socialism?Communists always look broke so **** that. And socialism is for hippies, seriously. What's wrong with a democratic republic?

my grandfather had 4 brothers his mom and dad killed in the purges, after ww2 he and another RRF did not return to the home land and they were the only two who saw old age. that is not why i detest the communists, capitalism is the single greatest economic system and it has brought the most people out of poverty and into prosperity, communism has done just the oppositeI hate communism because it brought nothing but oppression and misery to the country of my ancestors. there is EVERYTHING to fear and hate about socialism.
large government, government interferes with everyone and everything, and everyone except the government suffers. My parents actually lived in communist russia, so I take their word on how much communism sucked.
History has shown that both cause just as much problems as Capitalism. I mean look at China for example The people who make the clothing we buy at wal-mart make less per week than it costs us to buy that clothing. If it could be done successfully then I'm sure Communism and Socialism would be good forms of government but the problem is something always corrupts those forms of government so they can ultimately never be perfect and done correctly. ferrari2001And this is the beauty of Capitalism. The Government doesn't HAVE to do anything. They leave it in the hands of the people. The government does not know better than you. The less they do, the better.

I think it's more in the hands of big corporations.

North Korea is a "democratic republic", just like how the Soviet Union is a "socialist republic".
The Scandinavian Countries use democratic socialism and social democracy, NK is a totalitarian communist dictatorship.

You're mixing up economics with political systems. You can have a democratic republic with any economic system.

My reasoning was that you can't associate the regime itself with its official name.

Yes, the nobility of our day. If you drain the power of the Government it will just pour into the hands of the rich and powerful.

1. the issue in this quote chain was 'in the hands of the people' (not gov)...so that is still true 2. there are lots of 'poor' people with stock...almost everyone that has any kind of retirement plan has some stockPlease Log In to post.
