I feel like the prequel films could have played on the buddy cop genre a bit. Cracked.com said it best. like butch cassidy and the sundance kid, only in space with jedi. Obi-wan and anakin are jedi partners solving problems in space, the clone wars happen (in this case, an army of cloned sith against the jedi and republic army), obi-wan has an affair with padme (which turns anakin to the dark side when he finds out), then the emporer assumes power and wipes out the jedi. that was the basic idea. just a really dark trilogy depicting the downfall of anakin and the republic from the beginning of the saga. If also established anakin and obi-wans friendship from the beginning, by showing them actually acting like friends and watching each others backs in battle. This would have made anakin's downfall much more hard-hitting and emotional since it would concern a life-long friendship ending horribly and gives anakin more of a reason to turn to the darkside (him being betrayed by obi-wan and padme's affair being the main wedge that drives them apart)
what we got instead was 2 kid-appeal CGI-fests and 1 suddenly really dark movie that shoehorns anakin's downfall into the second half of the film. And the effect of anakin turning into darth vader doesnt have much of an impact since we dont actually see obi-wan and anakin acting like friends to each other untill right before the point in which obi-wan leaves to fight grievous. Up untill that point, the only interaction the two had was something more akin to a teacher and his student (since thats what they basically were) rather than 2 really good friends. ergo, the whole "you were the chosen one! you were my brother anakin! i loved you!" part doesnt have much of an impact since we never actually seen obi-wan and anakin just "chilling" like real friends would.
That is what i think was wrong with the prequel trilogy. Just too much kid appeal and bad characterization.
