I tend to listen to the more classic/experimental fused rap

Kevin Gates: he gets a bad rap, but his albums are really good. He also is an intelligent dude.

Young Thug: one of the most versatie rappers out right now, but people only pay attention to his image. His flow and delivery is one of the best right now, good ear for beats, and unique lyrical style.

Nxworries: Good underground group

Flat bush zomies: they are out there, but amazing

Lil Ugly Mane

It's been some time since I really listened to rap.

I would have to go with Tyler, the Creator though.

@Master_Live:

Mets Harvey could be out for season.

Cubs lose about 8 of 9 games.

5 Cubs infielders will start for the NL.

White Sox on a mini roll despite losing today.

Pitchers wanted to compete in the HR Derby? =(

EL-P, Killer Mike, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab Soul, Logic, J Cole, Heems, Aesop Rock, Slug, Vince Staples, Domo Genesis, Earl Sweatshirt, Freddie Gibbs, Fashawn, Immortal Technique, Joey Badass, YC The Cynic.

I would put Mos Def/Yasiin Bey on the list, but he never hardly releases albums or much of anything anymore :(..........

I find Chance extremely annoying, and it's not just his voice. His subject matter has not evolved from album to album, and he, IMHO, is not really speaking about anything. Im not a childish Gambino fan either, but I still thought Favorite Song was dope as hell.

I cannot stand Wiz. Show and Prove was brilliant IMO, everything since that? His dumb ass laugh, and a bunch of weed rap. He's a one trick homie at this point.

This artist ^ Joyner Lucas is one of the hottest new guys right now. It's too bad he didn't get the XXL freshman cover. I've been a fan ever since I saw him open for Tech Nine.

@hillelslovak: I think it's because my tastes have kind of changed, because I used to hate chance and wiz. Honestly I have hated most modern rap for awhile, and considered myself more of a classic guy. I have also started looking more at artistry of artists, and although wiz isn't the best rapper he is a great artist.

Call me old school but there's nothing that beats 90's-00 old school Hip-Hop musics and I just fine today's Rap isn't good as it used to be but anyways, been listening to old school raps like Tupac, B.I.G, LL Cool J, Master P, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Digital Underground, Coolio, and Freddie Gibbs.

I will point out that I'm a Serious XM member while I enjoy listening to Octane, Lithium, and Hip-Hop Nation, I enjoy listening to all kinds of music but Rock has always been my favorite music genre but I will say that I been listening today's Rap and the rappers I like to listen is now Kevin Gates and J Cole. I also like Talib Kweli-State of Grace.

I think he used to be be an awesome producer, and a serviceable mc. First three albums, and to a lesser extent, My Beautiful.....

Now? He has lost it. His beats are garbage, and his flow, message, and style have not evolved. It's the same reason I cant stand Jay Z. album 1. I'm the shit, yeah! Album 2. I'm the shit, yeah! Album 3. I'm the shit, yeah!!! Over and over and over. Neither talk about anything at all, except themselves. The scope is hilariously small, especially for two guys who act like the entire earth revolves on them.

Contrast that with Run The Jewels. Those mofos can make me feel like I'm in New York and Atlanta in 2599 or something, and they are talking about real things in a vicious manner.

GTFO you attention seeking plebeians! Rap threads are the only ones where people go out of there way to say they do not like the genre of music, eventhough that is not what the discussion is about. Thats not what anything is about!!!!

Not gonna retort regarding Kanye. But Jigga? Cmon man. He talks about some real deal stuff. Have you heard Meet the Parents? That is an EXCELLENT storybook of what is literally happening in African American homes. Moment of Clarity? Lucky me? Minority Report? Song Cry?

S. Carter can get deep when he wants to. Dude is the truth. He also sprinkles in comments about politics, middle age, the problems of being rich[sarcasm], etc. Don't get me wrong he does have tons of bravado in his rhymes but that is NOT it when it comes to him.

Forgot to answer the original question. I don't listen to much new stuff. Only current MCs I dig are Lecrae and Game. I listen to lots of hip hop though. My faves are

Jay-Z

B.I.G.

Will Smith

Ruff Ryders

Dre

Cube

Outkast

2Pac

T.I.

I know I said current rappers, but you guys have to admit Kanye's earlier stuff was classic.

College dropout

Late registration

Graduation

Are still amazing albums. Kanye started sucking when he dropped the bear image. He started being a mogul/personality and not an artist.

Here is a compiled list of lines Jay Z directly stole from other rappers, and note that list was made in 2007, so it likely has more than a few more added. He is a facade. The real deals do not bite most of their career.

Biggie - "Hypnotize"

"That's why I, squeeze first ask quesions last. That's how most of these so called gangstas pass"

Jigga - "Squeeze 1st"

"That's why I, squeeze first ask quesions last. That's how most of these so called gangstas pass"

Biggie - "The World Is Filled"

"When the Remi's in the system, ain't no tellin

Will I **** em will I diss em, that's what these hoes yellin

I'm a pimp by blood, not relation

Y'all still chase on, I'll replace on, punks

Drunk of Dom"

Jay-Z - "Give It 2 Me"

"When the Remi's in the system, ain't no tellin

Will I **** 'em will I diss 'em, that's what they be yellin

I'm a pimp by blood, not relation

Y'all be chasin, I replace them, huh?

Drunk off Crist"

Biggie - "Who Shot Ya"

"Thou shalt not **** with or see Poppa

Feel a thosand deaths...

Jay-Z - "Squeeze 1st"

"thou shalt not **** with raw me, or he

Face a thousand deaths...

Biggie - "Unbelievable"

"Get ready to die, tell God I said hi

And throw down some ice, for the nicest MC"

Jay-Z - "Friend or Foe 98"

"Do me a favor dude, get 2 ice cubes I pass them

Take that ice up, for the nicest MC"

Biggie - "Kick in The Door"

"Your reign on the top was shorter than leprechauns"

Jay-Z - "The Ruler's Back"

"Your reign on the top was shorter than leprechauns"

Biggie - "One More Chance"

"isn't this great, my flight leaves at eight

her flight lands at nine, my game just rewinds"

Jay-Z - "Girls...Remix"

"isn't this great, my flight leaves at eight

her flight lands at nine, my game just rewinds"

Biggie - "Real Niggas Do Real Things"

"On the road to riches and diamond rings

Real niggaz do real things"

Jay-Z - "Real Niggaz"

"On the road to riches and diamond rings

Real niggaz do real things"

Biggie - "Who Shot Ya"

"Old school new school need to learn though

I burn baby burn like Disco Inferno"

Jay-Z - "Frestyle"

"Old school, new school need to know this

I burn like Left Eye Lisa Lopez"

Biggie - "One More Chance"

"I don't chase em I replace em"

Jay - "Is That Yo Bitch"

"I don't chase em I duck em I replace em"

(Memphis Bleek Did That "Iz That Yo Chick" Song an Had the Same Shit, but I Think it Waz Bytin off Jay-Z.... "I don't love 'em I **** 'em I don't chase 'em I duck 'em I replace 'em with another one")

Big L - (on the 7 minute 95' freestyle with Jigga)

"All I got for chicks is hard dick and bubble gum"

Jay-z - "A Million and One Questions "

I'm not really feeling many of these new school mc's, most of my music is 90s hip hop, nwa, eazy e, dr dre, snoop, CMW, mc eiht, too short, geto boys, cypress hill, ice cube, ice t, ATL, X Raided, kurupt, daz, 2 pac, kool g rap dj polo, public enemy, paris, concious daughters, and a 100 or so more.

There is a small number of current mc's I can listen to though, k dott (kendrick Lamar now), nipsey hustle, YG.

Here is a compiled list of lines Jay Z directly stole from other rappers, and note that list was made in 2007, so it likely has more than a few more added. He is a facade. The real deals do not bite most of their career.

You are talking about two different things. The original premise is that Jigga only raps about "being the shyte". My previous post explained while I disagree regarding that. This post is talking about him biting. I don't see it that way. In several of those songs he uses the actual MCs voice(a la sampling) in the song. When he doesn't the line is so well known I consider it paying respect to contemporaries, not biting.

Biting is trying to steal someone's style or flow, or outright rob their lyrics. That isn't what Jay does. He always pays respects to those MCs lines.

I am not fooled by that. When I see someone biting, I do not take their artistry seriously. It is no different in my eyes than someone who let someone else paint 80 percent of their painting, then turn around and take credit for the painting because they put their 20 percent in.
