Poll What was the best new Star Wars movie? (23 votes)

The Force Awakens 13%
Rogue One 61%
The Last Jedi 13%
Solo 4%
The Rise of Skywalker 9%

The Force Awakens - A rethread of old ideas. It introduced a bunch of new and interesting characters, so it's a shame the movie tripped over itself trying to bring back so many old ones.

Rogue One - Excellent movie, go see it.

The Last Jedi - Ryan Johson's much hated Star Wars movie. It actually introduced a lot of new ideas for the franchise. Canto Bight was the series' jumping the shark moment.

Solo - I thought it was a really entertaining movie. Not sure what the sequel baiting at the end was all about. It answered a lot of questions nobody ever asked or wanted answered.

The Rise of Skywalker - The pace of this story seems to move at 200mph because it doesn't want you to think about anything. As soon as you do, it all comes crumbling down.

So which one out of the five was best? Was there any movie that you were especially thrilled about when you saw it?

Or did you just vote for the least insulting movie?

I enjoy Jedi and Revenge Of The Sith.

Not pretend either is perfect, know many people esp hate Sith, but they are just more enjoyable an experience.

As for the Disney movies... eh.

They all have this well produced but ultimately hollow feeling.

Guess of those Rogue One, but still not really a movie care much about.

probably rogue one for me. the way it slotted in so nicely before episode iv was really cleverly done. that there wasn't a happy ending for the protags gave the sacrifice they made some real gravitas. the battle over scarif was epic. and getting to see vader rampage gave me goosebumps. that scene is probably my favourite out of any star wars films. the darkness, the silence other than the drone of the alarm, then the breathing, the red light sabre humming and then carnage. the utter fear from the soldiers hammering on the door "help us!!!" brilliant scene

Yeah, Revenge of the Sith ain't bad. I like the general plot points:

- Anakin is trying to stop a cataclysmic event for him and understandably joins a side that can help him achieve this power

- Balance is brought to the force as at the end of the movie there are two Siths left and two Jedi

I like a lot of things in the Episode I-III trilogy, it's just that Lucas went really overboard with the CGI here and it has aged horribly!!!

Oh yeah, one thing I also really liked about Rogue One is that it featured no Jedi, that was really a first for Star Wars movies. And it allowed the movie to be something different and tell a different story.

My favourite fight in all of the new Star Wars movies is probably the one in Snoke's throne room. Just looks so good visually

  1. The Last Jedi. Easily my favorite after the OT. Yes, I'm serious. Interesting character dynamics, looks at old ideas from new angles, fan service moments are relevant to the story and never used just for the sake of it. Has a lot of problems (Canto Bite) but overall I love this movie.
  2. Rogue One is my second favorite, but it's actually kind of a bad movie. First two acts are dull, with the second being almost irrelevant to the plot (Jyn's motivations would make more sense if it was removed entirely). Flat characters that we barely get to know, many of which are brought in by happenstance. Darth Vader makes a dad joke in an otherwise completely unnecessary scene. But that third act really picks up and shows us a ragtag group of misfits fighting for something bigger than themselves. And the space battle is about $100 million worth of glorious fan service.
  3. Force Awakens. Good movie hurt by playing it too safe, and throwing in fan service for the sake of fan service.
  4. Rise of Skywalker. It's a mess, but kind of a glorious mess.
  5. Solo. This is going to sound weird, Solo is the least flawed of all these movies, but it's still at the bottom of my list. It's a fun Sci Fi action movie that tells a good self contained story with a fairly interesting cast of characters. The rough draft of the script was just a list of bullet points of all the things Han mentions about his past in the OT, but they made it work. However, while there is nothing bad about it, there just isn't anything that memorable about it either. I saw it and liked it, but have no desire to ever watch it again.

For some reason I just cannot get into the main Star Wars films at all. I watched the original trilogy and liked it; but I kinda checked out about halfway through Attack of the Clones after being disappointed with the Phantom Menace. Never bothered with the newer movies, not sure if I ever will. Not that they're bad...it just doesn't interest me.

Surprisingly, the only Star Wars related thing I watched recently was the Mandalorian, which I enjoyed.

yeah it's aesthetically glorious. and i enjoyed it on first viewing.

then i read some stuff on reddit talking about how the choreography was a bit iffy and it spolit it a bit for me because once you see it you can't unsee it. iirc the first guy bottom left in your pic goes for rey, gets blocked, bounces back, then starts to pirouette back towards her as other guards approach her, he has a clear opening to strike her but veers of to the left and continues to pirouette away from her and somehow ends up locking swords with one of his mates in a move that makes absolutely no sense. then there's the guard with a sword in each hand who locks rey's lightsabre in an arm grab but the sword in his other hand he could use to stab her mysteriously disappears. still good though and i probably wouldn't have noticed if more observant people hadn't pointed it out

edit: found a yt vid with both of the above in it, gs not letting me embed it in an edit for some reason

As of now, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was by far the best I seen Disney do and for better or worst, Disney is better at making side project Star Wars movies and Solo comes seconds for me. Rogue One was well done in terms of pacing, good character build up despite they are only in shorts of time.

I knew more about Jyn in one movie than I knew about Rey in three movies. Beginning was weird but besides that, thought it was solid. I really enjoyed the middle and craved the ending. I liked seeing the internal power struggle between the middle management in the Empire. And I like how they made the flaw in the Death Star actually relevant to ANH. The last battle was simple amazing. The Darth Vader scene hallway was awesome.

Giving everyone in the group some sort of crucial role in the actual mission so it didn't feel like anyone was there 'just because' even though Donnie Yen was the one that was the closest to this. I like Donnie Yen, but he was really wasted in this movie. Rogue One gets the vote.

The Last Jedi. Not that I'll ever watch it again. JJ Abrams ruined the trilogy.

Sequel movies? Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

All time? Revenge of the Sith or A New Hope.

Rogue One easily. It's a good movie and a good Star Wars movie. It doesn't butcher the source material or pretend to be anything it's not. It's just a filler and an enjoyable one at that. I haven't seen Solo so no comment on that one. I hated the main new movies. They make the prequels look like masterpieces, which....they aren't.

I voted for The Force Awakens, the least bad of the trilogy. It was mostly retreading of old grounds but it opened up so many possibilities and left me excited for the future of the franchise. The Last Jedi I found very disappointing at first, but after the hollow, meaningless and rushed fanservice of Rise of Skywalker, I subsequently appreciated that it tried to take a new direction. Even though it mostly failed miserably at that...

The spin-offs (Rogue One and Solo) were the least flawed but they didn't stand out too much for me.

It feels like JJ Abrams was at his creative best in Force Awakens, introducing a bunch of new interesting characters: Finn, Poe, Maz Kanata, ... and new locations.

The Rise of Skywalker is where he feels at his creative most bankrupt. It didn't flow as a movie and it didn't flow with the other movies that came before.

This is a really solid list, I pretty much agree with all of what you said.

I didn't like Johnson's movie all that much at first. That spaceship chase. A lot of stuff was introduced and quickly thrown away (Canto Bight, children with the force). The final fight between Phazma and Finn had a lot of epicness in its visuals, but had zero emotional impact like a fight between Darth Vader and Obi Wan Kenobi had.

But there was also so much stuff I loved. The connection between Rey and Kylo. The way that Snoke met his end. Yoda was brought back, not as fan service, but to play an actual role. And it was glorious!

I think it's my favourite out of the three. With Rogue one being my favourite out of the five.

I pretty much agree with what judaspete wrote.

In retrospect, The Last Jedi was the most memorable one. It had some dumb moments (like the "saving what we love" scene and the casino subplot), but the light speed kamikaze and Luke facing the First Order were two of the best moments in this new trilogy. They also conveyed a sense of desperation from the good guys in a way that I felt was never done before in the franchise. And despite the criticisms against Luke's characterization, I thought it was refreshing to see that it didn't go the predictable route into making Luke a badass Jedi master.

Rogue One was arguably better, with a spectacular ending, to the point it overshadowed the rest of the movie; maybe that's why I can't remember most of the things that happened until the movie's climax.

The Force Awakens was good popcorn fun, nothing more, nothing less. Other than what happened to Han, I thought it lacked drama and suspense to make it more memorable than TLJ and RO.

The Rise of Skywalker felt like a tedious quest where they have to get from point A to point B, then from point B to point C, and so on. It also felt too similar to Return of the Jedi.

I have no interest in watching Solo at the moment.

Solo is on Netflix and its pretty good and Donald Glover as Lando was the best part of the movie.

I really liked Alden as Han Solo, he did a tremendous job. But I can also see why people say that Harrison Ford is Han Solo, and that nobody could ever replace him.

@pyro1245: Well if you haven't seen Rogue One, I'd suggest checking it out. It's a good stand alone movie.

The Mandalorian is a great self-contained Star Wars story as well.
