I live in Canada and am currently working on getting a bachelor degree in political science...I am almost bilingual in French (which is a requirement of becoming a diplomat in Canada), however I am undecided on what I want to do in my graduate studies...My only real concern is what language I should learn as my third...I'm thinking Spanish since it's easy and knowing English and French makes it even easier and due to political strife in South America and Spain itself, it would be quite interesting, but many people know Spanish so it would probably be hard to become a diplomat based on that. Thoughts?

All that matters is that you're fluent in idiocracy.

Russian can be quite useful, former soviet bloc countries all speak it or understand it.

I say you already have the required lingual skills, why seek to learn other languages?

Depend where you want to be a diplomat. Russian could be an interesting option.

Since you already know English, I won't suggest that one. Most leaders of developed countries speak English though. What else you should learn depends on where you are going to be. China? Learn Chinese (obviously). Eastern Europe or Russia? Learn Russian. The Middle East? Learn Arabic. Pick the region you think you will be in and then chose the language accordingly.

Mandarin is the most wanted language the FBI and other organizations want their employees to know. I'd go with that.

Not trying to stir up a political quarrel here but what basis do you have for saying that? Diplomats are probably the best type of politician given that their job is solely on creating or extending peace and economic relations between two nations. So you must be an isolationist?

And yeah, Mandarin or Arabic are clearly the most useful but I really don't want to suffer through the learning process involved. Haha. Spanish it is then I guess.

However, knowing one of those languages (Arabic or Mandarin) might set you apart from other applicants if you are applying for a job.

And also might get you transferred to not so safe areas of the world....which is something to consider as well.

Well see the worst part about being a diplomat in Canada is that you need to know French...If it wasn't for that and the incredible advantage of knowing French in Canada anyway I wouldn't have bothered to learn it haha...So I'm thinking that my mind has the capacity for one more language and I am trying to make it count.

Applies to learning Spanish too, as you could end up in Colombia.

Or Mexico...not the safest right now either. Even French can have some danger. Maybe German/Dutch or something along those lines.

You are both correct in that, South America ain't the most stable continent in the world and French is an official language in many African countries which are definitely not ranking too high on the HDI list haha...
