Curious as to what the most common major is. Mine is economics. I got it simply becauseI love it. I tried biochemistry for 2 semesters and realized the rigidity of it wasn't for me, but I still wanted to work with numbers. Economics I have found is what works for me.

What's yours and why did you pursue it?

Did math and econ. For a while I didn't think I was going to do math but in senior year I took a bunch of math classes and loved them. Now I regret not doing more math.

Electrical Engineering. I did it because I liked the electronics part of phyics in high school. I'm almost a junior and am kind of regretting my major. I plan on finishing it up though because an engineering degree is a great thing to have and I'm actually making money and getting good references because of the co op program.

I've kind of realized I want to be a teacher now.

Maybe you could continue on with your education and become an engineering professor.

Psh that's way too much work. I'm too lazy to learn all the stuff required. I was thinking high school math or something easy along those lines.

I would enjoy working as an engineer at a small company. I think that's the only place I could imagine myself being happy working as an engineer. Way too much BS at big companies and I don't want to start my own business.

You know I've looked at the ME curriculum at my school some and it seems like you guys do a lot of fluid and temperature stuff. That seems really boring to me compared to say working on an axle, differential, or something.

I'm very similar except am just pursuing an econ degree right now.I want to get an MBA, or a PhD in econ but would love to get a B.S. in Math if I can find the time in my 20s. I'm only 22 but I still feel too old to be getting a double major.

If you are thinking about doing a PhD, you should absolutely do the math major. Hell a math major is more important for an econ PhD than an econ major is.

That stuff is important for things like engine design, and turbine design and stuff, but yeah, it's not really my preferred subject matter.

Take a look at the CEOs of major companies or banks. Most of them have MBAs rather than PhDs.

First, that is a poor metric because it only accounts for a single occupation (and there are other types of high-paying jobs). Second, that's confounded by the fact that there are more MBAs than PhDs.

Most PhDs are teachers. Please find a statistic that says on average, PhD graduates have a higher income than MBA's.

And many professors do things like consulting work and hedge fund management. I don't have a statistic on hand, but then again you originally made the claim.

I made the claim because: 1. Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan Chase: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Dimon 2. CEO of Citibank : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikram_Pandit 3. CEO of Wells Fargo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikram_Pandit 4. CEO of Apple: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Cook They all have MBAs rather than PhDs. I can list more if you like.

There are a ton of options in law, no matter who you are there is at least 2-3 specializations that would appeal... Granted I ended up not choosing law school...so who am I to say :P

Good luck mate.  It seems to be an amazing program there.  Georgetown was my top choice and I got rejected, so I'll be going elsewhere for my freshman year this coming fall.

You're picking out a few exceptions and acting like that's the norm.  Most people with MBA's don't even make anywhere close to seven figures let alone $30 million.  I'm not saying it's not a useful degree to have, it can be great, but the truth is if you want to big bucks, you'll need to go to a premier MBA program and obviously even then the odds of making millions a year are slim.  A general MBA from a mid-level school will give you a solid career, but it's nothing special.

Regardless, if you get a PHD in Econ from Stanford or an MBA from Wharton or vice versa you'll be in good shape because those are all good degrees from prestigious places.
