I was watching a film on Youtube called Tough Guise and its analysis on masculinity and its relation to violence. That got me thinking, what IS the most important aspect of masculinity (the film was WAY too broad on the subject)?

-A man's need tobe superior to others

-the need for respect

-to feelstrong/big

-to beable touse violence, whetherby means ofdefense or coercion

-the ability to repress emotions

-to be independent

Those are the prominent aspects I can think off. Though they all are interelated of course, but which one you think is the one that most describes masculinity?

What makes a person masculine is the realization that they don't have to be macho all the time, and that being 'soft' isn't a sin.

I agree with you in terms of very personal relationships, white collar workplaces, and the company of in-laws/multiple older women. Being masculine anywhere else is just too much fun/actually beneficial depending on the setting.

Personally, I'd say knowing when to fight and when to accept that someone else is right.

what makes a man, is it the power in his hands?

is it his quest for glory?

Give it all you've got, to fight to the top.

When I was 14, I asked my Dad what it meant to be a man. His answer was deceptively simple and I was too young to understand the complexity of it at the time...

Fortunately, I've grown to understand and embrace his definition.

self-confidence

that is the only and most important aspect of masculinity.

not your ability to drink Budweiser
not how many chicks youve banged
not your lust for blonde, big-racked women

simply self-confidence.

I'd say masculinity is judged by how you react when put under pressure and whether you 'soldier' through pain. I don't mean your reaction to being stabbed, rather putting in effort to completing an objective (like a marathon), to the best of your ability.

This is how to make a man

  • You cut out his tear ducts, a man doesn't cry
  • You know it's a man once it can go in the woods and kill a bear,no guns, shirts off, combat knife
  • Can Drink 50 Gallons of Whiskey without dying
  • Has 15 women waiting for him at home
  • Own at least two businesses that have two totally different functions
  • Has 30 children, that's two to each woman!
  • Owns a monster and/or Pickup Truck
  • Knows how to play more than 3 chords on an electric guitar
  • Has chest hair eqivalent to the bear he should have scalped

If you haven't done any of this by the age 21, then you aren't masculine, and you aren't a man.

No, the only thing that makes a man macho is a true moustache. Anything else is just to distract from the complete lack of masculinity.

There isn't anything manly about Encyclopedia Dramatica. Massive amounts of ....can I say the Ph word on Gamespot? Anyway, massive amounts of that type of imagery and its relationship to masculine is beyond me.

There's an article there that's called "offended". It's full of decapitated kittens, rotting flesh, fountains of blood, and goaste-like pictures.

I think it's all completely trivial. What's the point of being manly? What's the reward? And the definition shifts from person to person, so you'll only impress so many people if you achieve whatever asinine goals you set yourself.

That said, I'm a girly lady man who wears ribbons in his hair and rides to tea parties on a white pony.

the reward is respect, or the ability to truly live your life as you see fit without any care as to what anyone else says.

To be able to express emotions fully...and also to be able to withhold emotions when necessary...

I think those are the most important aspects...a guy can be macho..but completely emotionless...a guy can be able to use violence...and get nowhere..

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

-Rudyard Kipling

Beating women? :roll:

No, seriously though. The most important part perhaps being able to support yourself and your family if you have one.
