My closeby city...So what do you guys think of the place? What are your stereotypical views of the city? Anyone been here? Just curious. I put up a topic some months ago entitled something like "What do you think of California?" and got some surprisingly distorted ideas of what the state is. So what do you know about San Francisco? Be it the main facts or your impression of the culture or essence of the place. What do you know about it?

I live right on Powell street. Well, the place is dirty and chaotic, and the roads are too narrow. Lots of homeless people. But it is very diverse and lots of Sushi restaurant. Everything is so expensive here, though. Lots of interesting places to see and you have everything you need. Most pedestrians are quite friendly but most clerks in stores are very mean. This is how I feel about my part of the town.

I see one of the major foundations for Zen Buddhism in the west founded by people like Shunryu Suzuki.

It's a city. Although Zappa's "Who needs the peace corps" did sum it up quite well at the time.

How? I doubt this represents anything close to most of the city. Coincidentally my 21 year old sister is working at a Trader Joes in San Francisco, since she's going to college at San Francisco State. She told me there were so many Russians who go to the store who would sit at the entrance after purchasing anything and would stare at the receipt to see if she did something wrong. She would say hi to them and they'd sneer at her, neither to a lot of them speak much English.

It's extremely liberal and laid back, after attending several raves, concerts, protests, and parades in the city I can say it's an acitvist's dream, along with Seattle. As Mac Dre put it, it's"the world's biggest little city" and that's really true imo; it's a major city it's dirty and has homeless ppl what do u expect? But it has that small town charm, and has a character only few major cities can compare with. All in all it's one of the most unique and interesting cities I've lived in.

I just got back from there, two friends and I went down for three days. It's pretty much hippie central, where a lot of people perform on the street, smoke weed, and just lay around doing nothing. It's pretty ****ing awesome.

love frisco. I drove there from there from long beach and must say it's one of my favorite cities I have gone to visit. Everything feels so close together which for me is a good thing, love alcatraz, love how everything feels so laid back, its freakin great.

I think it'd be cool to live there due to all the gaming related businesses near by. Although I hear it's ultra expensive there.

Was almost destroyed by a bunch of missiles filled with VX gas that a bunch of soldier turned mercenaries had on Alcatraz where they were holding tourist prisoners. Luckily for you San Fran citizens Connery and Cage were there to save the day.

I'm in the heart of the city every day since I work there and I grew up here and I gotta say there is nothing like it. All races and all wierdos everywhere and all are ok with each other. When you get to the inner part of SF like the Mission or the projects or near Daly City it's everyone for themselves and watch out fools are out who want your belongings and hate on you. The financial district is the best to be in. If you hit the Tenderloin near Powell street you've gone too far.

I work in the Financial District and live in the Castro, so I do have a great commute (half block to MUNI station, 5 stations down the main line, half block to my office), but this town is a little too kooky far left for my tastes. The fact that things like Critiical Mass are tolerated by the police or the two naked guys I saw walking down the street Tues night across the street from two police who just ignored them just made me shake my head, to say nothing of the homeless guy a few weeks ago who threatened to burn down my house when I chased him out of the yard.

I love in San Fran so I know a lot about it. It is a great city but I don't know if it is for me and as soon as I am old enough I am gonna move not because I hate the city just because of my curiosity of living in other places and I can't imagine living in one city for the rest of my life.

If I had the choice, I would have never left. It sucks being broke, but with so many different things to do and so many f#$king cool people, it's the place to be. I went to USF and worked at a Harley shop right in downtown. I live in Vegas now, you really can't even compare the two. If I had the opportunity/money, I would move back in a heart beat. Frisco for life.

I live right across the Bay.

Personally? I don't like it that much. My buddy visited me recently, and we went into San Francisco quite a few times, and we were treated with disrespect quite a few times (especially on Haight Street). I mean its okay, and fun at times, but honestly, I look forward to the day I'm back living in New York.

Haight is pretty toxic, but the neighborhood/subspecies of SF I hate most are trendy Mission hipsters. You know, the ones who have to make sure you know how obscure the bands they are into are and who look like a thrift store vomited on them

I love San Francisco. I stayed there a week last summer visiting my cousin. it reminds me a lot of my home of Montreal. it was definitely a breath of fresh air as I was staying in Huntington Beach for the entire summer doing an internship. I was going crazy in Southern California, people are just so shallow, empty and obnoxious down there and when we went up to San Fran I felt at home again. people seemed to be normal again. also a beautiful city.

well I only saw a bit of SF and only stayed a week, and my cousin lives in one of the richer areas in the Italian district or something. but I do agree that I think Montreal is nicer, but it was similar as in being a big cramped up city with a lot of diversity to it. and I probably felt they were similar because I was in HB for so long that I missed the city atmosphere heh.

No offense to anyone at all here. I don't why but... For some reason, I have a stereotype that everyone there is gay Again, no offense to anyone. I don't know where I picked that up from, but I have it stored up in the back of my mind. I'm not saying that's true. I'm just saying it's what I heard one time...

Probably because they have the largest gay population in the US and it's extremely Liberal? Everyone there being gay is pretty damn incorrect though.

San Franciso is nice but hectic when it comes to traffic. The neighborhoods are nice depending where you are of course but the real annoyance is the up and downhill slopes which is pretty dangerous if you were to think about it. Pretty clean, safe, and the people there are nice. As for the price that's another story.
