Neko Case is pretty good, her self-titled stuff is more alt country (very rockish, tho), but she is also in The New Pornographers (sort of indie pop-rock)

Rilo Kiley is also pretty good.

I also like Regina Spektor

Not all of the above is rock, but female singers in bands I like.

A lot of their songs are indeed in English (their debut song was entirely in English), but they still have that Japanglish accent here and there (but surprisingly minimal). But their best songs are in Japanese, IMO....

I've got:

- The Distillers
example 1, example 2

- Stolen Babies
example 1, example 2

- Diablo Swing Orchestra(it's not growls/screaming, but the female vocals are often in an operatic styIe)
example 1
, example 2

... And not all metal has growls or screaming (assuming that's what you're refering to in the OP); power metal and thrash generally don't, as an example.

Imogen Heap and Ladyhawke. My favorite group with female vocals is Ladytron, but they're more electronic.

I think they're in part considered metal (but I don't think they actually c|assify themselves as that, from what I saw in an interview)... But I'm not completely sure.

Diablo Swing Orchestra is (symphonic/avant-garde) metal though. I ignored TC's "no metal" request, assuming that he or she heard death/black/metalcore/grindcore/etc. and said "I don't like metal!" :P

Yeah... there are a lot.... but I also say the band 'Garbage' because of the singer Shirley Manson. She's a good singer and gives off a really cool vibe.

Below are 2 live vids that capture her in action.

It's been such a long time since I heard their songs..... Ash Like Snow is the only one I remember. Gundam 00 sucked as an anime, but it had some really great theme songs.

Carah's band when she wasn't with STG was pretty good, too. Versant they were called.
