There are several political groups that have the name Tea Party in there somewhere, but at the core, they're people who are tired of the way things are being run in Washington and want the government to reign in their spending (no more bailouts). Different groups may have varying agendas, but that's what people started it to respond to... they named themselves after the Boston Tea Party (look it up if you're not familiar with it) to serve as a rallying cry, that people can make a difference. And they're one of the most hated and despised political movements in recent history.

Wow I thought it meant something completely different. Then again I don't live in the US so.

Originally, the Boston Tea Party was a revolt against the British government against The Tea Act, but now it just stands for a bunch of right-wing hicks hellbent on disrupting the advancement of society, and filling the pockets of ultra-capitalist douche sacks.

Really? Cause I think disrupting the advancement of society is giving hand outs to every single person that won't (not can't but won't) work for it. I'd rather fill the pockets of "ultra-capitalist douche sacks" that work hard for their money than fill the pockets of the ultra-lazy douche sacks that won't get a damn job because they know the government will be there to give them there welfare check.

It's where people get together sip on tea between singing tunes and saying things like "Pip pip" & "Cheerio" Either that or they drink Mr. Pib while eating Cheerios. It's one or the other. I think.

"Tea" stands for Taxed Enough Already. It's basically a fiscally conservative social movement that advocates less spending and taxation in government. They also tend to be socially conservative, white, and religious.

This is the crux of the Modern problem. You assume that life is a dog-eat-dog scenario, when the reality is very different. There needs to be a fully comprehensive welfare system for the less fortunate, without assuming that they are loser freeloaders.

Illegal immigrants are another topic altogether.

Being one of these "ultra-lazy" douche sacks may I state an opinion? If not, I'm going to share anyway. I don't plan to get these checks forever right now I am considered so mentally unstable the government pays me NOT TO WORK. I know that seems silly but you've never seen me try to sit through a class lecture or flip a burger. Or take orders durring some type of rush (lets just say I cry and scream a lot you would swear I was a 2 year old having a tantrum). I cannot drive and therefore I do not have a job for both of those reasons. I am hoping those reason will change in the very very NEAR furture but sadly, that's about as much of a sure thing as you living in the playboy manision. So until then I have to have something to support my life on. I don't go around spending my money and food stamps on 5 course meals and trips to Vegas I assure you. The moment I can actually earn my income I'm going to because trust me an actual job pays a lot better than the welfare and government checks I get ever will. Same for everyone else living off of them. I'm not saying that there aren't people who do take advantage of the welfare system because I am VERY SURE there are. But I am saying don't judge the group by the actions of a few.

Someone actually posted tea party facts. (smack) The best part is... they're asking questions on a forum when they can find the answers through their search engine. Wikipedeia is usually about 75%-95% accurate

That's why I clearly directed my comment towards people who "won't" get a job as opposed to people who "can't" get a job.

The modern Republican party didn't come into being until the mid 19th century as part of an anti-slavery movement, with the first president who identified with them being one Abraham Lincoln. The South, and yes the Deep South, was heavily Democratic Republican, which eventually molded into the modern Democrat party.

Actually, the Republican party as we know it today came into being more around the mid 20th century. Basically as far as social policies were concerned the Republican and Democratic parties basically swapped (meaning prior to that the Democrats were "conservative" and Republicans were "progressive"). At least thats what I remember from my History 102 class 2 years ago. I would also like to point out that not everyone in the world is extreme left or right, lazy won't get a job or rich douch sack types. In fact they comprise a very small minority, but because they're so vocal you give them much more attention. The fact is a lot if not most people are relatively apathetic to politics because they feel that nothing will ever change, and/or that there's no one that represents their values (I'm in this category). Basically anything that gets more people energized and involved is a good thing democratically speaking so in that way this whole Tea Party deal looks like a good thing (even if much of what they're saying is just silly). p.s. Anyone who is annoyed by the Tea Party should keep in mind that the people in the Tea Party felt exactly like you 2 years ago when Obama was bout to be elected, and the tables will probably turn in another 2 so just be patient.

The party policies change over time, like anything, but the actual party was founded as an anti-slavery party. The original form of the Democrats, the Democratic Republicans, has been around since the early early days of the country didn't really come into focus until this early party (which was the party of Thomas Jefferson) eventually split, with those who supported Andrew Jackson becoming the Democrats and the others becoming the Whigs. The thing about the Tea Party is that people treat it like some extremist faction, when the fact is that the splintering of political parties is as American as a constitutional amendment: not common, but not unheard of. I could go into more detail about the history of the parties and what they've done, but I've learned that most in OT wouldn't really care about the history lesson. >_>
