This is pretty big news, and I've checked over the Forums but couldn't find any posts about it, so here we go: (p.s., your search function sucks GS)

Seven days of mourning have been declared in the northern Spanish region of Galicia after 78 people died in a train crash on Wednesday.

Four people died in hospital, the rest at the site of the accident, a spokeswoman for Galicia's supreme court said on Thursday morning. She added the numbers were still provisional. Judges in Spain are responsible for recording deaths.

The crash occurred as the train approached the north-western Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela at 8.40pm. A further 131 people were reported injured in the accident, the worst in Spain for 40 years. Reports said about 20 were very seriously injured.

The death toll might rise further, a spokeswoman for the office of the central government in Galicia warned. One Briton was among the injured, the Foreign Office confirmed. The US State Department said five Americans were hurt.

Rescue workers battled to free passengers trapped inside the carriages, several of which had overturned. Some caught fire. Bodies covered in blankets lay next to the overturned carriages as smoke billowed from the wreckage. Firemen clambered over the twisted metal trying to get survivors out of the windows.

"The scene is shocking, it's Dante-esque," the head of the Galicia region, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, said in a radio interview.

Both drivers of the train were unhurt in the crash. One of them was reportedly seen wandering dazed among the dead saying: "I've derailed, what am I going to do, what am I going to do?" It is still not clear whether the apparent excessive speed was the result of human error or a technical fault.Guardian

Apparently the train was doing 190 km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

If anyone has the video go see it. To judge it for yourself.

The electricity has nothing to do with it, it probably sparked because it started arcing as the pantograph (the thing drawing the electricity from the overhead catenary wires) started moving away from the wires, or as the cables made contact when the supporting trusses were knocked down by the derailing train. The train was already going way to fast and derailing at that point.

How is it possible that these things don't have emergency systems to restrict the speed?

I think 10 died in hospital, while 20 of the 130 are seriously wounded. Also I wouldn't call massive blunt trauma a very pleasant way to die, if it snaps your neck or something along those lines maybe, but to basically get beaten to death, count me out.

Probably because these accidents are extremely rare and the operators are generally extremely responsible so it's never an issue. Don't need to be fail safes in place everywhere. More fail safes and systems means more maintenance and more things that could go wrong thus delaying the operation of the train. It's just easier to have well trained operators.

Edit: I was incorrect. Apparently these systems exist but this time they failed.

They actually have it, it seems to have malfunctioned here. Trains have all kinds of safe-guards in case the conductor either falls a sleep or something along those lines. They will stop the train if it runs a red light or anything along those lines, if it's going too fast towards a station and in some cases even if it's going too fast for a specific area of track. These trains apparently had this system, but it obviously didn't work.

That makes sense. I was just guessing. Those kind of systems could cause a lot of issues that could cause delays.

Apparently I shouldn't assume.

After a few pretty bad crashes in the 60s and 70s trains have all kinds of systems to make sure the conductor is paying attention. At first trains had a dead man's pedal or something along those lines, basically it was a pedal that had to be depressed for the train to run, thought the problem here was that the crew would simply weigh them down so their foot wouldn't die on long journey's. The newer version after a massive crash in Canada works so that it has to be pressed at a sound signal, which means you can't weigh it down. Modern trains use positioning systems to determine if the train is going too fast, going where it shouldn't etc. and either alert control or even stop the train. Basically the most modern trains run themselves and the conductors are only there in case something goes wrong and to monitor everything.

Lol no, the speed limit is there for a reason, and if it's not respected this happens. After all these trains weigh hundreds of tonnes, so the force exerted on them in turns is immense even at "just" 80 km/h in banking turns, so you can imagine what happened at over 2 times that speed. It's suspected that he was speeding because the train was running behind schedule and some train companies are really hard on that. In Tokyo a metro train derailed because it was running behind schedule and the conductor was driving faster than the limit to avoid punishment - which is supposedly some kind of "training", but is in fact borderline psychological torture.

The main issue is that these trains have on-board systems that should stop the train if it's going too fast or otherwise not obeying the signalization, which obviously didn't work here.

I read somewhere that the statistical chance of you getting killed while riding the train is around 500.000/1 while getting killed while driving a car is 10.000/1. Though that last figure seems a bit too common, in general it waaaay safer to use the train or anything but a car basically.

You do know that these trains travel at 200 km/h by regulations on straight sections? If I was the engineer I'd go and post a photo of that too, you don't exactly get to drive something at 200 km/h every day.
