God doesn't exist. What makes you so sure that there isn't one?No evidence? That's okay, but what if the evidence is absent in our solar system?Illogical?Nothingness is even less logical than a divine being. It seems to me that some of you are scared if God actually exists. You jump to the conclusion that God does not exist, because there's no evidence. Now, I don't claim I know everything, but have you scanned the whole universe, every galaxy, every solar system and every planet in it.I don't think so.Why not be on the safe side? You prefer nothingness over heaven?

I don't need God. I really don't have a fear of eventually dying and therefore I don't need God to live forever like some people. I don't really like to say God doesn't exist either, but if he does it has no impact on my life as I don't believe in worship, especially out of fear.

Nope. It means that you live your life to the fullest and then die instead of clinging onto some tiny shred of life. Why do you want to live forever anyway? Don't you have anything to live for?

I'm not going to feign a belief in God to try to cheat my way into paradise, since an omniscient being would surely see right through such a facade. And the universe as an inexorable, totally natural phenomenon and life as the outcome of probability and luck both seem likelier to me than them being the creation of some deity suffering from ennui.

Depends on your point of view, really. I think god not existing makes everything have a point. That's my belief. Then again, I am not athiest, nor am I a theist.

Okay, but in which deity must one believe in order to be on the "safe side?"

Seems like a pretty silly argument to me.

the burden of proof is on the ones making the positive existential proclamation. I do not have to prove that you don't have an invisible yellow dragon in your basement, you have to prove to me that you do. Without proof, it (in this case, God) is not. /thread.

That's a really bad attitude.Things actually have MORE meaning with the assumption God doesn't exist. It means you should make the most of your time here and do what is meaningful to YOU. If God exists and this life is nothing but a giant test to please him until the next one that's what I would call pointless.

I'm not sure that God doesn't exist. I just don't care and will operate under the assumption that he doesn't until I get some sort of reason to think otherwise. However, I am 100% sure that the world's religions are untrue; all of them.

God is nothing more than man's way of dealing with the fear of death. There have been literally thousands of gods through history, it would be a unlikely that you would ever choose the right one seeing as they all are in equal in merit. Personally im siding with Thor in this one.

I do not like anybody who think they have found the truth, and especially the ones that think they have a monopoly on truth, that includes many atheists as well (I have encounter numerous fanatic atheists in my time, an example of such a guy is Richard Dawkins, a washed-up biologist deciding to wage war on religion in the name of science, by the incredibly unscientific way of finding the worst examples of religion and presenting them, rendering him as biased as the religious representatives of the religions he is critizising). The thing is nobody knows anything about the nature of the universe and that we are an insignificant people on an insignificant planet preaching each other about things we can never be certain of. That being said, I think scientific study is the best way to approach the universe, since I feel it is the only way we can learn anything constructive about the universe, albeit we will probably never find the nature of it.

Not exclusively. The Sumerians believed that the afterlife is a dark place where people wander aimlessly eating dirt and dust. I would say religion is more a way of explaining what you can't explain with conventional methods, death being one of them. Different societies will react to death differently, and therefore their religions will also be different. Some people over the course of time have considered death to be the greatest honor one can acheive, while the modern Westerner will generally do anything to stay alive. I still think organized religion in general is ridiculous.

Swap "atom" with "God" and you get a very common question. Also I think that the first law of thermodynamics would agree with me that something must have existed always.

What makes theists so sure that a God exists? Not just that, but the particular God their bronze age book speaks of?

The burden is on them to prove there is a God, not just that there is a God; but it happens to be their particular religions God.

I think most atheists would agree on the Big Bang starting the universe, but we can accept that we don't know how that started or what came before. Just like evolution explains how all of the Earth's life got to where it is now, we don't know how those first few life forms were created.

Raiden_Fan

All things are pointless. If I went on a killing spree tomorrow, 100 years from now do you really think anyone alive then will remember, or care? Throw a rock into a river and it gets swept up by it, it creates no ripple.

But their is a positive way to look at it. If what we do doesn't matter, then all that matters is what we do. Here and now, the decisions and actions we make. The things we do that effect our own lives and the lives of thoes around us. That is what really matters, touching the lives of thoes we care about. Not some looming question of heaven, hell, or god hanging over our head.

In short, we shouldn't need the threat of hell or the promise of heaven to be decent to fellow human beings.

Raiden_Fan

no. without us god would not exist.

(who would think of him to praise him??)

you can't prove he would exist without humans here to think of him.

close your bible and open your mind man.

and we don't really exist ether.... are we souls? are we just matter in motion? what even makes up "matter"?

if everything (including us) is made out of atoms, and atoms are 99% energy, what does that make us??

and to what the poster above me said, since NOTHING matters, live your life the way YOU want to! because it doesn't matter!!

just watch this clip....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q95kX_EP2Nk
