Right now, it holds a 56% approval rating, which is absolutely horrible. However, I've never allowed critics to affect my decision to see a film or my opinion of it. I'm going to see this tomorrow at Empire 25, in Times Square (there's a good deli in that area that makes amazing Chicken Italian paninis).

I'll post my own review of it either tomorrow or during the weekend.

EDIT:

Here's my review. Check it out.

For one, 56% is above average. Two, instead of going on my typical rant about how people just bash movie critics whenever they give a bad review to something they like and what value criticism gives to us as media viewers, I'm just going to ask the TC why are you bashing the critics' reviews without ever having seen the movie? What if the movie is legitimately bad? Are you allowing for that possibility, or are you just bashing critics because you're a Spider-Man fan?

Where did I bash the critics' opinions? I simply said that I don't allow critics' opinions to affect whether I see a movie or not, or to affect my opinion of it. It seems as if you read the OP with a certain feeling (i.e. disdain for people who bash movie critics' opinions) and allowed that to affect your interpretation of it. Hence, your misinterpretation of the OP.

Since you don't know anything about critic's reviews, let me edumacate you: more than half of the critics liking a movie isn't absolutely horrible you dingus. 20% and under is. 56% is very decent RT rating for a movie like this. You know that 56% means more than half of the critics are recommending you to go see it, right?

56% on Rottentomatoes isn't horrible. The rating average is close to 6/10 as well. It should be a decent film. It won't be to the level of the aforementioned Winter Soldier or the upcoming X-men but it should be an exciting superhero film.

They have their audience. I think tonally, they're in the right spot. Even though they don't amount to anything more than computer-generated action scenes, enough people seem to feel like the latest Marvel movies are doing okay justice to their heroes. For one of these movies to be good for me, I think they'd be less enjoyable for the audience that this is targeted at.

Yeah I had seen the movie wasn't doing amazingly with the critics.

Will still see it, but with all the OTHER great movies that have been and will be coming out around it (i.e. The Raid 2, Godzilla, X-Me, etc.) my hype level for this one hasn't been too high anyways.

If it manages to be more than just serviceable I will consider that better than expected.

Also will be doing my own review, which shall be better than yours! :P

Showcasing so many villains in the trailer was already a red flag. It's like they haven't learned from Spider Man 3.

LMAO you act as if the critical reception to this film validates something you've "been saying", even though overall comic books films have been more widely praised in recent years than ever before.

You're assuming that I think critics' opinions are always justified. That's not so much the case, as I think critics' opinions have some merit and shouldn't be ignored simply because the movie happens to belong to a comic franchise you have an affinity for. You seem to be bashing critic reviews as arbitrary, whereas I'm arguing that your opinion is based simply on brand loyalty and therefore just as (if not more) arbitrary.

@KHAndAnime:

These movies try to bring in the mainstream crowd. That's why a lot of these movies seems to insert a love story in these movies. I can't blame Hollywood though.

I've should have noted it was my personal opinion. So I wasn't speaking on the success of these films.

Saw it at an advanced screening, and I thought it was really fun, even for not having seen the first. It's got a lot going on in it which can kind of drag it down at times, but for the most part it's an thrilling, and actually funny ride. Not to mention the special effects and fight scenes look fantastic.

After hating the original spider man trilogy (mostly cause of Tobey), I was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed this one.

Yeah, they make it look like there's 3 villains in the movie, but that's not quite true. There's 1 villain for 80% of the movie and the other 2 get a scene each.

Exactamundo.

The Sinister Six may work in comic books but it just doesn't work in film. Hell, there's only 3 and it still doesn't work lol

Curious: what's appealing about this movie for you people? Do you plan to see every theatrical reincarnation of Spider Man until the end of time? Do you feel like you're getting your money's worth in entertainment? If so, why? Is the CGI-spectacle entertaining? Or do you genuinely find these movies interesting for its plot, characters, and thematic elements?

Or is it something people go to see and kill time? This seems like the movie to take your date out to. Not necessarily a movie you'd go see just because you like Spider Man.

56% is good, not bad let alone absolutely horrible.

I'm not gong to watch the film. Maybe if it's on TV and I have nothing else to do. I'm not that keen on comic book superheroes.

Just remember, folks: the critics gave acclaim and great reviews for 'Slumdog Millionaire'.

I've found that the worse the rating the critics give, the better the movie. Plus, I trust more in the reader reviews than the supposed "experts".

@KHAndAnime: Most movies I watch (not necessarily in the movies, I rarely go) are just time killers; there's very few movies I think "I really have to watch this!"; normally my expectations range from "Meh..." to "Guess it could be worse" to "Looks half decent...". That being said, I did go to the movies for this one since I wanted to clear my head and it ended up being quite enjoyable...I guess not going there expecting to gain a deeper insight into the Spider-Man universe and the psyche of the people in it helped =P

@KHAndAnime: I will see every Spiderman movie just because I like Spiderman but I won't like every most Spiderman movies because they don't portray the comics well IMO.

I can see why people wouldn't want to see it but every movie deserves a fair chance on it own.

It seems like they're really hyping this movie up, so why the subpar choice of actors? Jaime Fox is about the only one who's had a somewhat reputable career, and even that's a stretch. Paul Giamatti and Sally Field just don't offer enough support that would make me want to see this in the theaters. Maybe when it comes on FX in a year or two I'll watch it.

Doesnt sound good. I've enjoyed a lot of the comic book movies, but often because I had very low expectations. This one didnt look all that appealing to me. Lots of action, but just didnt seem to have the cohesive/captivating story. Still will see it because I'm into those things.

The difference between ASM2 and Winter Soldier is fucking astronomical.

One is a great example of how to do a super hero movie, the other is just trash.

Not only 90% at RT, but I have yet to run into someone who watched it and didn't like it.

And it's only 1 month old.

I agree with BRHD, 56% is not good. Would you be happy with a 56% on a test?

It looked medicore from the beginning. The only reason this series was rebooted b/c Sony wants to keep the rights. Same reason why Fox is rebooting FF.

In other words, it was like Batman and Robin? Too much shine and not enough substance?
