YONKERS, N.Y. — The U.S. Department of Transportation and Consumer Reports magazine have released a poll that illustrates how widespread distracted driving is among young people and a plan to help fight it.

The poll says 63 percent of people under 30 acknowledge driving while using a handheld phone and 30 percent say they've sent text messages while behind the wheel. For those over 30, the percentages were 41 percent on the phone and 9 percent texting.

Only about a third of the young people said they feel such behavior is very dangerous.

"Distracted driving has become a deadly epidemic on America's roads, and teens are especially vulnerable because of their inexperience behind the wheel and, often, peer pressure," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

Story here.

Discuss. Is a damn phone call or text message really worth your life?

I refuse to answer the phone when I am behind the wheel. A phone call isn't worth my life nor the innocent people who may be involved in a crash thanks to said phone call/message

For the vast majority of people, driving is the single most dangerous thing that they will do. How many other times in your life do you have the lives of multiple people in your hands? If you only dedicate 100% of your attention span to one thing in life, you should make it when you're driving. That said, people simple do not appreciate the responsibility that they carry when they get into their car. I'm sure that 99.999% of texts can wait a few minutes before they are composed and sent. If it's urgent, you're probably not sending it via text anyway.

I never even really text when not driving. But when it comes to making calls, loudspeaker = very handy.

Unfortunately, a lot of the time, these people hit someone else and the person they hit dies, while they get to keep on living. It is one of the most irresponsible things a person can do... and I think any unreasonable distraction while driving should carry huge fines (for infractions) and sentences (for committing injury or death).

I admit, before my province banned using a phone while driving, I often answered the phone and a couple times texted... but only when I was either at a stop light, or in light traffic. Of course, this was well before the studies started coming out showing that it is as dangerous as driving drunk.

My first and only car crash was texting. It was the same day i sold my xbox and got $150 for it. Then im texting some chick and im literally going like 1 mph and i thought i breaked already ( under the influence ) and then i hit this lady ,giving her a minor scratch on her back bumper,i was trying to get her not to call the cops ,and i did ..but i ended up giving her $100 ,witch really defeated the purpose of me selling my xbox ,iwas really pissed, now i just laugh about it.

30% of those polled are worse driver than drunk drivers and yet are not in jail having their butt flouted by an angry rapist. there is no justice in this world, only special interest groups like MADD.

Depends on the message, like what if you're in a situation like in that campfire story about the woman who had a serial killer in the back of her car, if the guy had texted her instead of flashing his lights she might have lived. Or what about those texts that Brett Favre got? I'd say those texts would be worth my life.

I usually wait until I park to text. If someone texts me, he/she should be prepared to wait a while. If the matter is urgent, give a call.

I try not to do it. It's really aggravating when a fine girl just texted you however and you have to pull over to send a response.

Nice sig... Now give it back :x

Nope, a text is not worth my life or others lives. That is why I do not text while driving. I will answer my phone occasionally though. Not all the time, but when it seems of importance.

HAAA! MY SIG IS BIGGER THAN YOURS  8) :lol:and for the guys saying that they pull over just to send a text is a bit extreme,i mean im not saying its correct to text while driving, but its not that hard! but seriously dont be replying instantly to girls ,wait 10 - 15 minutes after every text, makes the conversation longer and drives the girl mad wondering why you havent texted back LOL

Its not that its worth your life, your life doesn't matter, thats your choice, its that you are risking the lives of others, people who are responsible and who do take care. ____

Yeah, its a shame that such graphic scenes have to be used, but its often the only way to help people realise what they are actually risking. Epsecially since of how conditioned we have been by other aspects of television.

It's absolutely not worth it. My local police force made a video about some girl who kills her friends texting while driving a few years ago. They never actually showed us the full movie but the clip was pretty decent and was briefly famous all over the place

Did they make it graphic enough to perhaps cause new teen drivers to stop and think about the dangers? I don't mean gory, but effective enough to get through to them?
