http://www.politico.com/blogs/onmedia/1011/Soldiers_burn_OReilly_books.html

Admittedly, they burned them for totally non-political reasons, but it's still kind of funny.

Said the solider who burned them:

"Some jerk sent us two boxes of this awful book (SPOILER ALERT: George Washington — Patriot; George Soros — Pinhead) instead of anything soldiers at a remote outpost in Afghanistan might need, like, say, food or soap. Just burned the whole lot of them on my Commander's orders."

The real reason that they burned them is in the link.

Have to agree with the soldier's assessment of the quality of the book. O'Reilly's books are pretty damn awful.

They are little bit better than Ann Coulter's garbage, but not much.

Send them a box of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War." I've only read lines of referenced portions, but I heard it's a very good book.

Not something I would agree with. When you get a present that sucks you politely smile and then toss it behind closed doors. Not let the world know on a blog. Buring a gift and letting people know you burned it, even a gift that sucked, makes other people less likely to want to send stuff.

Books aren't useless.

On topic: Pretty disrespectful what the soldiers did. We never threw away anything we got when I was over there. If we couldn't use it it went to the S4 who distributed it to people who needed it.

When you are putting your life on the line for 'freedom' miles away from your country in the middle of the desert and the time you get to hear from your home is when they send the book of a religious totallitarian nut that believes in magic as 'presents' you come back and tell us that.

I wouldve used it to wipe my ass for the next few weeks.

I got almost thirteen years in the Army, three tours in Iraq, been shot at, and almost blown up several times. I think I can tell when somebody does something pretty dumb over there. When we got care packages that was full of stuff we didn't want we didn't do something disrespectful like burn it and put it on a blog. We just handed the stuff out to the locals so they can use it during our next patrol. It has nothing to do with the political beliefs of the person who sent them, it was the thought that counts. According to several surveys done most troops lean to the right anyway.

The thought of american soldiers handing out O'reilly books to locals in Iraq made me LOL.

BTW this is just a bad publicity stunt.

This isnt just that the gift sucked. The gift was an obvious attempt to show that "hey I'm sending something to the troops".

What the soldiers did was their way of saying "either send us something useful or dont treat us as a good opportunity to show off your work".

it actually gets pretty cold in the desert around this time. there's nothing to hold the heat in. So during winter it can actually reach near freezing temperatures.

That's the first thing I would want.

An operational outpost could get so boring you find yourself reading dictionaries, weeks old newspapers and mechanical guides for the most mundane pieces of equipment possible.

Stesilaus

Snacks, undergarments, magazines, most books (apparently this one wasn't one of them), electronics, letters/cards from kids in school, hygiene products, and more. As long as you're not sending hate mail or something what's sent is usually appreciated. One time I got a huge graph calculator as a gift since I was taking an online algebra class at night.

I don't care to go to YouTube and type his name. Apparently he's some sort of political commentator (or computer expert; thanks, Xaos), which is enough. I would normally expect this forum to be upset that books are being burned, but that's not the case. I was curious as to why.
