The taliban have had way more casulties than the coalition forces, but they keep on fighting and still control a big portion of Afghanistan. So hipotetically if the US left tomorrow, it would be just a matter of months untill they assume total control over the country, so in my opinion as of 2011 the taliban are winning...

There are no winners there. Can't decide a winner/loser on casualties either.

I think that the taliban are winning just because they haven't been defeated yet... It sounds stupid, but if you think about it no it doesn't. The US isn't there to occupy the country forever so if they leave Afghanistan in this state as of 2011, Vietnam would happen again.

Technically, we're not at war since Congress hasn't declared war against the Taliban. But to answer your question, it's kind of a grey area. We kill way more of them than they kill of us but they're still fighting and lowering morale for the locals. Some of them have infiltrated the local police forces and military, which is seen when some of them randomly shoot Coalition Forces while on joint patrols. What holds us back are limitations; in a normal war we fight against an opposing force that wears uniforms while with this conflict we're fighting people who don't wear uniforms and will hide within the locals. Kind of makes it hard to target the enemy when you don't know who the enemy is until they're shooting at you. We have the potential to win eventually, but you can't say how long it will take. If we left tomorrow it would probably be months, if not weeks before the Taliban would overrun the capital and take over the country. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

It is difficult to tell who is winning or losing in Afghanistan since the two forces that are engaged have different perception on what it means to be winning.

It's almost impossible for the US to win this type of war. Barring a miracle, their goals will never be accomplished in the region.

Hearts and minds was always more effective than shock and awe... in fact shock and awe has pretty much never worked against these types of enemies and yet it continues to be used.

I don't think anyone is winning. The Taliban will probably just play the waiting game and hope the Coalition forces eventually leave. European forces will no doubt completely pull out within 5 or so years because of the economic crisis, but I wouldn't be surprised if the USA grinds it out and pushes the Afghans even further towards the Taliban.

I'd be very surprised if the US creates a stable Afghanistan.

It's probably more a case of they have no clue what to really do. There aren't really any very clear objectives. They need to get intel on leader positions and stuff before they can do much. Then when they kill that guy they just replace him with some other dude.

I don't see anyone winning in Afghanistan. It's a "war" on an idea. Terrorism. You can't defeat an idea. As long as there are people alive in that area, there will always be "terrorists", I know first hand that the majority of Afghan people do not want the Coalition in their country. I have seen too many of my friends shot and killed by Taliban and Al-whatever to care what happens to that country. I say we have made our point. They hit us, on 9/11. We hit back hard. For the last ten yrs we have been pounding them and making the point that you don't mess with the USA. I say get our men out of there. I'm sick and tired of hearing about my friends getting killed and injured for a country that doesn't want us there.
