so are you for or against letting the tax cuts for the wealthy expire?

Tax cuts for people making $200,000-$250,000 a year are set to expire at the end of the year. However the current administration is set on keeping the tax cuts for the upper-middle class and downward. I suspect that this will be talked a lot about around the upcoming elections in November. That being said let's get a jump on it OT.

My opinion is with all this talk about a growing deficit, removing tax cuts from the people who can afford it while still living life fairly comfortably should be a fairly popular decision. Not with rich people obviously, but the majority of us aren't rich.

However my opinion isn't the only one out there so let's hear yours OT.

You misread. I never said no taxes, only for raising them unless absolutely necessary. And it's only absolutely necessary when we're not paying for a welfare state and still can't afford our bills, in my eyes.

Taxes are at their lowest rates in a long time. We aren't exactly in danger of it at this point.

I'm sorry but $200-250k is not very much money. It's certainly doesn't qualify you as "wealthy." Tax cuts should stay in effect. Tax the REALLY rich maybe, but not upper middle class.

Personally I think they should get tax breaks if they are using their money to help support the economy. Lets say its a wealthy man but he is using his money to fund business operations that give many people jobs. I think he should be allowed to keep most of his money since he is contributing to other people's well being by giving them jobs. If its someone who is using all their money to live in a posh mansion and they never contribute than I say tax them.

Or we can not add onto the deficit anymore by cutting welfare programs. When we're not paying for those anymore, we can work on the deficit.

I would cut, and reform. Reform social security, Medicare and Medicaid. Everything else should go away, and if it can't be gotten rid of, should be reformed to be more reasonable. The tax payers shouldn't have to bear the burden for these programs.

Why not raise taxes while streamlining and cutting welfare programs? There's no reason not to cut spending and raise taxes at the same time... also, why don't we cut military spending as well?

I am not for letting them expire. It isn't the governments money to take from them. They earned it, they should keep it. Taking it from them is just stealing in the most basic form

Edit: i mean, i am for letting the tax cuts stay, and not expire. I misread the title.

Who knows. Birds? Maybe somebody took Iron Man 2 a little too seriously.

The way I see it, defense is like chess. Always plan ten moves in advance. God forbid a threat ever appears where we would need to use them, but better safe than sorry. I also think, in order to keep a volunteer force, we need the best equipment. Who wants to join when we're getting our aircraft blown out of the sky? Unless you're a helicopter pilot...

The "Bush Tax Cuts" are way more than just "cutting taxes for the rich." It affects the middle class just as much, if not more than the upper class.

Sure, it's subjective, but just because you don't think it's fair means we should go with legislation that will help you but harm others.

[QUOTE="mattbbpl"]What do you define as welfare programs? What would you cut?airshocker

I would cut, and reform. Reform social security, Medicare and Medicaid. Everything else should go away, and if it can't be gotten rid of, should be reformed to be more reasonable. The tax payers shouldn't have to bear the burden for these programs.

I was looking for something more concrete. If I were to take this statement at face value, I would assume you're for getting rid of road maintenance/construction, parks, public school systems, etc. I was hoping you would supply some explicit examples so we could find some common ground. For example, I'd like to see us get rid of subsidies and the like.
