I was curious about the Advent Children film, but I have never played Final Fantasy VII. I understand that there must be lots of references to the game, but should I have played the game in order to understand the film?

Wouldn't be a bad idea... if you have no clue of anything FF related you'll be lost...

So the film doens't really rely on itself? As far as "anything FF" goes, I always thought most FF games -- if not all -- had very little or nothing to do with each other.

Well, It takes place after FF7... I didn't get that much of it due to the fact that I didn't play FF7... Consider there is cloud... and Sephiroth... and.... ...

So if the game is accessible, I would advise playing it first.

Sounds good. Cool avatar, btw. Is FFVII good on the PC -- if I play with an Xbox 360 controller?

In no uncertain terms, YES. AC was made for FF7 fans. If you haven't played the game, it still works as a cool action film with slick animation, but frankly, you should still play FF7, given that it is an absolutely classic game with a brilliant story and immersive gameplay. One of my favourites of all time. Dunno how well it works on PC as I never played that version, but still, get that game.

By the time you have finished FF7 after around 30 hours or so you will be extremely attahced to the characters which helps the movie no end. Without the game during a few scenes a lot of the impact would be lost.

It's hard, though, to play through a game with 3d graphics like that. Somehow I don't mind playing old-school 2d FF games now, but looking at that sucky 3d graphics from the PS1 ... ugh.

The demo shouldn't be too hard to find, but I don't reccomend it. The FMV's in the PC version are grainy and the sound just sounds...weird. It looks nicer though, that is for sure.

Exactly. I know that's what I did before I watched it, and I understood everything just fine.

It's a terrible movie either way. The only people who like it are the people who are total fanboys of the game. I'd go as far as to say it's one of the worst I've seen.

I would say play the game because I think it is pretty good, but don't get too excited about the movie because I thought it wasn't that good.

There's actually a little recap about FF7 on the disc for those who haven't played that game itself. It's not a great recap, but it does let you in on what happens.

you will get more out of the movie if you play the game first, and the game is awesome so i suggest playing it anyway.

I take it you havent seen many video game movies then? Tekken anime? Battle arena toshinden anime? Advent children is one of the best, and not many would say otherwise. A lot of people just dont understand it and will use the "anyone who likes it must be a fanboy" line of reasoning.

Advent Children is a great piece of fan service. But like all fanservice, if you're not a fan already, you won't think it's that great. ln other words yes, you'll enjoy the movie a lot more.

Yeah, play the game first. If you don't like the game...then skip the movie. Advent Children is not that good other than the visuals.

You should, it would make understanding the movie easier. But you may not be watching the movie for several weeks... or months if you decide to play FFVII all the way through.

All the games have nothing to do with each other. other than final fantasy x and x-2.

Most of the games have little to do with eachother as far as storyline goes (disregarding FFX-2 with FFX of course). Advent Children is largely dependant on FFVII. That doesn't necessarily mean that a person won't understand most of the movie, but having knowledge of the backgrounds of the characters and such will definitely help.
