My company will be having a shutdown for two weeks later this year and since I have several weeks of accumulated vacation pay, I thought it would be a good time to do some traveling. Alas, my sweetie has consumed most of his vacation so if I travel anywhere, I will probably be traveling on my own. I wanted to solicit some input on places to go. I have a few in mind currently Rome - I love antiquity and Rome has that in spades; I've never been which is a plus in my book, but I don't speak any Italian, at all Tokyo - I've been once, though it was almost 10 years ago, so it would feel fresh. I like it there because it feels like such a different environment, just walking down the street NYC - Less exotic, but I've only visited once and never on my own; obviously there's a lot to do and see there, though. If it were you, would you select one of these to visit for about a week, or somewhere else?

I would personally pick Rome, as it seems like it would be the most enjoyable out of those three, but of course, that is just my opinion.

Ah, I'm a city guy; hate being in the wild. My whole spiel on camping is that my ancestors fought, bled and died for 50,000 years so that I could sleep in climate-controlled comfort on a big fluffy bed, and it would be spitting on their sacrifice for me not to do so :)

I really have a strong urge to visit Iceland. Don't know why, either that or go back to Europe (already been there this year; visited 5 countries).

Thailand, you could go to Bangkok and one of the islands (I recommend Phucket). Absolutely fantastic country. The Islands are gorgeous this time of year ( you could swim while it rains so that's awesome.) And Bangkok is simply on the richest cultures i've ever been to.

Well if I were selecting I wouldn't be going to NYC merely because I am from the area, but there is a great time to be had for a week in the city.

Earlier in the year my girlfriend and I went to D.C. for the week and it was pretty nice, especially for a vacation considering there is lots to be seen and to do.

Ive been to Vegas once and have no desire to go back, and am not really a sun n surf guy, so Hawai'i probably isn't a great match for me. I actually turned down a free trip there a few months ago when a friend of mine was going and invited me along

Tokyo! I hear the Asian ladies love American men, though I suppose that doesn't benefit you. :P

Seriously though, judging by your geek level, I think you should go to Tokyo. I think you would enjoy it. That's just based off what I have heard. I've never actually been there. They built a real-life RX78 Gundam.

If I went, I might want to go to Kyoto or someplace just to mix it up. Oooh, maybe I should time my next visit to Japan to coincide with one of the several penis festivals. I will not provide a link to any of the youtube videos on the subject for obvious reasons...

If your vacation days don't become obsolete at the end of the year and there isn't one scheduled for this year, just catch one in the US and make your trip. I'm sure they have those in the US right? I had never even heard of those until just now lol.

I was there for the millennium; I'll probably visit again, but most likely will go back with my sweetie. We've been talking about a trip to the UK for a while (especially since he Morris dances), so that will probably get deferred until we can both take a trip.

I'm leaning in that direction; the other guy I'm on my current work project with is from Switzerland but is Italian; I'll have to ask him for some input and if I'll need to master much Italian language. I crammed like crazy when going to Paris and Japan, though those were both 3 day notice trips....

As long as you're not going this month, you'll love Rome. It's a beautiful place to visit - even on your own - and by September, things should have quietened down a bit and the locals will have returned, so the nightlife will be up and running again.

My sister was an exchage student in Milan and she loved it. My mom has also visited Italy twice, she is kind of an Italiphile. :P

One thing is certain, each section of Italy is very different from the next.

What I mean is, the food and culture and general just anything in Rome will be different from that in Naples or Venice or Milan or Florence, if you get what I'm saying.

What I mean is, if you are at a certain city and you see something you really like, buy it there, because there's a good chance you probably will not find it at the next major city, seeing as each city has its own character.

But if you are only going to Roma and not any other city, then this shouldn't be a problem, my sister was there for 9 months so she travelled around.

Also,Roma has TONS of architecture, TONS, ancient and Christian, churches and buildings everywhere. If you are interested in art and culture, you'll guarantee to find some.

Whatever you decide, good luck. :D

You will not go to any of those places. You will, however, go to Greece and enjoy yourself.

As an aside, you will also not flush the toilet paper in Athens. You will, against your will, eat rolled up grapeleaves.

Agreed.

To be honest, I actually reccomend something like February, when the tourist rate is actually the lowest.

My art teacher visited the Sistene Chapel and said you couldn't even enjoy it it was so crowded, she may have visited in the summer, maybe.

Really don't like Vegas, too trashy tourist for me. Was last there in 2001 for a friend's wedding (rockabilly themed wedding at the Elvis wedding chapel) and no desire to go back again. At all. Ever. :P

You will not go to any of those places. You will, however, go to Greece and enjoy yourself.

As an aside, you will also not flush the toilet paper in Athens. You will, against your will, eat rolled up grapeleaves.

Wow! I was going to say the exact same thing you did, word for word. What are the odds?

Were you thinking the odds were 43,564,489:1?? Because that's what I was thinking.

Sort of. Like a good engineer, I just guesstimated "40 millionish".

Hey , the taxi driver i had in Athens was nice he was called Niko Bellic or something similar. But the some of them were quite in your face when your trying to get in a taxi and there trying to get you to go in their taxi.
